Something Different: Autumn Steam over the colourful English mountains from Birmingham

Added: (Thu Oct 12 2006)

The best views of the countryside in a blaze of autumnal colour as we take in two mountain climbs behind a unique Express Steam locomotive in style and comfort on Saturday 28th October.

Imagine a comfortable seat next to a panoramic window in a warm carriage with the sights, sounds and smells of a hard working Express steam locomotive pulling your train over two steep mountain climbs, affording beautiful views of the vibrant and changing autumnal countryside. A great way to relax and put the hard working week behind you. This is the experience on offer on Kingfisher Railtours “The Cumbrian Mountain Dalesman” from Birmingham on Saturday 28th October for one day only!

Our train is diesel hauled from Birmingham to Carnforth where the unique British Railways steam locomotive No 71000 “Duke of Gloucester” is waiting to take us up over the Lakeland Mountains through Tebay and over Shap summit before cruising down the valleys and around Carlisle to join the famous Settle to Carlisle line for the climb to Appleby where we stop for around an hour and a half. Here you can explore this delightful town including the Ancient Moot Hall which will be opened especially for passengers on our train with the Mayor in attendance.
Upon leaving Appleby we continue to climb ‘The long drag’ up to Ais Gill summit and then cruise down through the Yorkshire Dales crossing the 21 viaducts and going through the 19 tunnels on this masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
At Hellifield, the “Duke of Gloucester” will leave our train and the diesel comes back on for the journey home.
