Excerpt:
Garfield Silcott, a young black hoodlum, had been found Not Guilty of murder.
The jury had accepted his story that he had stabbed the Asian shopkeeper in self-defence. It was true, however, that Silcott had been holding up the corner shop in Norwood, south London. Silcott's defence had argued successfully that the shopkeeper, Sanjeev Deol, was using excessive force to defend himself and that his life was not really in any danger. In truth, it had been a life and death struggle during which the left side of Silcott's face had been sliced with his own knife. Silcott's cronies had corrupted his surname to 'Silk-Cut' as a result of his newly–acquired status symbol scar. 'Silk-Cut' was a nickname that would pass into underworld folklore. Garfield 'Silk-Cut' Silcott would soon become London's most feared black gangster – the Don of the Yardies.
The young boy looked forlorn, for it was his father that Silcott had stabbed to death. Silcott looked across the street and for a moment the killer's eyes were locked with those of the boy's. The boy was clutching a pendant that hung from a gold chain around his neck. The pendant had been a gift from his father and was fashioned in the likeness of a Hindu god. "One day," the boy said to himself, "one day".
