If you are planning to plant orchids for the first time because you saw your neighbor's orchids in bloom, well don't just jump right away to buy your first plant. There are certain truths and fallacies that you need to know in planting orchids. It is best to be aware of these so that you don't waste your time, money and effort. Let me share with you what I know about the truths in planting orchids.
Truth No. 1
Because of the popularity of orchids, they are no longer considered as expensive. In fact, because you can see them everywhere, they have become very affordable for those who wish to become orchid growers and enthusiasts. I should know this for a fact because I myself have benefited from their very affordable pricing. I have built my collection with very limited budget.
Truth No. 2
Not all orchids come from the tropics. There are those who grow in very cold climate, like Alaska. And even if the species you have came from the tropics, they can still adjust in cold places. It is important though to keep them exposed to sunlight but not directly as this may easily wilt their leaves and flowers.
Truth No. 3
Planting orchids is very easy to learn. All you need is to choose the right variety that is easy to grow. Take for instance the famous Cymbidiums and Vanda orchids. These varieties are both forgiving of beginners because they are tolerant to neglect. As long as you keep their roots moist and keep them exposed to enough sunlight, then they should be fine.
Truth No. 4
Orchids are not carnivores. It is not true that they eat insects that touch the bark where they are planted. In fact, they lure the insects to them in order to pollinate, but they never eat them. This helps the orchids in producing beautiful blooms of flowers.
Truth No. 5
Orchids prefer moving air. It is recommended that you allow your orchids to be exposed to enough air circulation. Perhaps this is the reason why some orchids prefer to be aerial because then they can breathe more easily.
These truths may be simple but I can assure you that if you keep them in mind and that if you familiarize yourself with the different kinds of orchid varieties, you are on your way to a successful planting orchid adventure.
