Pressbox (Press Release) -
We are delighted to announce the publication of a new edition of ‘Life with the Painters of La Ruche’ by Russian artist Maria Marevna Vorobieff [1892-1984] (known as Marevna).
Marevna arrived in Paris from Russia in 1912, settled in a studio and soon made a dramatic entry into La Ruche, the beehive of émigré painters and sculptors. Her unique and nostalgic account captures the quintessence of a vanished era – when all the world seemed intoxicated with art. She recalls how young geniuses, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Chagall, Soutine, Modigliani (to name a few) lived, worked and loved; how harsh, relentless poverty never weakened their camaraderie. In writing of her friends, Marevna delineates them in the same way she paints, in the same way she lived – with frankness and intensity and in all colours. Marevna’s story follows her great love for Diego Rivera and the life of her own daughter Marika, to later years spent living at Athelhampton in Dorset and finally to Ealing.
Published by Patrick Cooke of Athelhampton House the new edition features paintings from the Marevna Gallery at Athelhampton House, a forward by David Phillips (Grandson of the artist) and a chapter explaining the Athelhampton connection by Andrea Cooke. Also included are various previously unseen photographs, some by Angus McBean and some from the family album.
