Mark Crockett is a visceral, fearless writer who knows how to suck us into his stories and make us root for the unlikeliest of heroes
Tess Gerritsen, New York Times best-selling author
Mark Crocketts second novel, the noir suspense/thriller Dealin with the Dead, continues the authors deep desire to keep his growing readership up way past their bedtime. A public library educated nerd (who didnt get around to writing seriously until his early thirties), Marks gritty grab-you-by-the-throat delivery will never be mistaken for the cookie-cutter, corporate approved blabbery that has-as of recently-flooded this genre.
The depth and darkness of his writing style mirrors the pathways of his life. Leaving home at fifteen, Mark worked his way through high school (East Orange High School, East Orange, New Jersey) and two years of college (Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey) via three part-time jobs. And was still swift enough in track to rank #5 in all of North Jersey (as a high school senior) as an Intermediate High Hurdler while also writing for the school newspaper. Flunking out of college his first go round, Mark quickly joined the United States Air Forces International track team and traveled the country for three years as a sprinter. It wasnt until leaving the military (and after a successful six year corporate stint with IBM) that hard times abruptly revisited. Less then a year after departing the computer giant bad luck, bad judgment and worst business investments emptied Marks coffers of over $60,000, his entire life savings. Regrouping was far tougher the second time around but college was not. More determined then ever to develop his writing hobby into a vocation, Mark overcame fear (and dyslexia) and devoured every writing course Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona had to offer (while also sneaking into undergrad and graduate level writing classes at the neighboring University of Arizona) over a two-year period. It was several years later (after five years at the helm of his romantic greeting card company, Gentle Persuasion Romantic Greeting Cards) his first novel-the suspense/thriller Turkey Stuffer was published by Simon and Schuster-without the aid of a literary agent.
Marks true-to-life survivor mentality breathes life into the protagonist (one Monticello Turquoise) of his new book Dealin with the Dead, a bad man-in the wrong place-at the worst possible time. And-with any kind of luck-hell only have to die twice to come out of this alive
