When looking to have full control over your PDF documents there are two items to consider i.e. content protection and security. Despite the fact that these two terms seem to have similar meanings they have inherent differences. With regards to protected content we look to prevent access to the document by unauthorized parties; secure content is whereby controls are in place such that the user authorized or otherwise cannot modify the document. Encryption is the main way to secure PDF files but systems based on password encryption keys make their management difficult because passwords can readily be revealed to unauthorized parties and they can also be identified by password-cracking software.
To achieve fully secure PDF files we must move past encryption (since once a document is decrypted the user can do what he or she pleases with it). In essence you will be regulating what the authorized user can do with your PDF document. We can secure content as sufficiently as possible by using Digital Rights Management (DRM) controls; a combination of DRM and encryption is what makes up LockLizard’s Safeguard PDF Security system.
As our PDF security system works to convert files into the PDC file format, meaning that they cannot be viewed using regular PDF viewers, we have our own Safeguard Secure PDF Viewer. By definition, this viewer is a standalone application that enforces the licensed use of the secure PDF files and also ensures that all the DRM controls you create for the documents are observed. These controls can neither be altered by LockLizard nor by the document user. This secure content viewer is also the one that transacts the license exchange and validation with the document publisher and does so transparently of the user. As such there is no risk of the decryption keys being revealed or passed on to unauthorized users.
To further realize fully secure PDF files our document viewer does not accept plug-ins of any kind and does not run JavaScript. It also does not need to be updated every other time that Adobe updates Acrobat.
