Pressbox (Press Release) - Tormis (Estonian) and Komitas (Armenian) are two composers who, through collating and arranging their traditional folk music, have kept their countries dying cultures and languages alive during oppressive times. Many controversial pieces by Tormis were banned by the Soviet Government. Komitas never fully recovered from his arrest during the Armenian genocide and died in a psychiatric hospital in 1919. Today there are about 10 Armenian families living in Scotland.
Rudsambee, company of 22 singers (since 1993), have always prided themselves on their unique ability to perform music in any language, and bring unusual and original music from other countries to their audience (without the cost of an air fare!). Singing such a wide range of music from Gregorian to Breton, Catalan to Gaelic, Rudsambee recognises the importance that music which may be a last remnant of the language or culture, is heard and enjoyed by everyone.
