Pressbox (Press Release) - Leopard geckos are from the southern parts of Asia, Afghanistan and mostly throughout Pakistan, and northwestern parts of India. They like dry humid places which makes perfect habitat for them. They have eyelids which make them very different from other lizards. They are becoming increasingly the most sought after captivity pet in the world.

They remained under rocks during the treacherous heat in the desert land of Afghanistan, Iran and northwestern parts of India. These areas usually get pretty cold in the winter months which force the leopard geckos in to hibernation. They are nocturnal creature which means they sleep during the day and up at night mostly to hunt for insects. Leopard geckos are very territorial so they do not live with other animals.

Leopard gecko's diet

They have a sharp sense of smell to help them hunt for food. Most leopard geckos in captivity will not eat dead prey for they preferred to catch their own. They are insectivores their diet include insects, worms, spiders and grasshoppers. Crickets are their favorite since they can hunt them even in their enclosures. When food is lacking they have the ability to store fat in their tails which is a very useful feature to have in the wild. Geckos go through the process of shedding their skin once a month for adults and more often for babies. They also eat the skin that they shed which provide them with proteins and nutrition. Calcium and vitamin d3 are very important for their diets. But exactly how they obtain calcium and vitamin in the wild are unknown for the most part. It is unknown whether the amount of insects they eat like spiders, crickets, and moths help them get their vitamins and nutrition. But it is almost impossible to duplicate the amount of insects they eat in the wild so vitamins are usually dusted on their most delicious preys.

How leopard geckos defend themselves.

A leopard gecko has predators in the wild like snakes, frogs, and foxes so their sense of sight and hearing helps them escape dangerous situations. Their wild and vivid skin color helps camouflage them from predators. The shedding of the skin also helps in the process it helps remove any scent left for predators to find. They go under rocks, and burrows during the day not only to avoid the scorching heat but also to stay away from potential predators.

Leopard gecko has the ability to detach their tail from their body when in danger. They have shorter legs which help when it comes time to flight. They will voluntarily drop their tail in the attempt to get away and help them get away much quicker. Their tail will grow back usually fatter than the previous one. In extremely rare cases the lost of their tail will cause them to get ill and even kill. Regenerated tail will often retain their color patterns and lack the rigid quality and shorter than a normal tail.
