Bob Rohrer, USMC Vet 1956-1962, known for his insightful articles on the world crisis at WMDterror.com, yesterday sent out an all points bulletin strongly recommending a novel, "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen. It is the story of the aftereffects of an electromagnetic-pulse (EMP) attack on the United States.

We at V.V.A.R. first brought up this issue in our article, "No Country - No Economy" of Oct.18, 2008. We quoted this by Douglas Stone in FrontPageMagazine :
"As the Iranians move closer to obtaining nuclear weapons, we need to begin thinking about what this could mean for our civilization. With only approximately one percent of shipping containers entering the country being inspected; with our borders as porous as ever, and, with terrorist cells around the world waiting to be activated, the United States, itself, could be held hostage by the Iranians or even be subject to an attack from which it would be almost impossible to recover.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has already proclaimed his desire to eliminate the United States as a force in the world. And with a new era of WMD in the hands of fanatical mullahs or their terrorist allies, one thing is becoming increasingly clear in the War for the Free World: We can lose. And losing doesn’t mean that our economy is set back by a few percentage points of growth or increased unemployment; or even suffers the death of a few thousand Americans as happened on September 11th.
The United States could be devastated even more thoroughly than Germany or Japan in World War II: our society as we know it can be destroyed, unambiguously, completely, perhaps irretrievably.
Even worse than a nuclear weapon would be the effects of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), either generated by a designed weapon or given off by a nuclear weapon exploded above the United States or even off shore. The Islamic Republic or terrorist allies could approach undetected with a weapon that would permanently destroy any and all electric and electronic devices – and these days that includes everything from toasters to city water systems to military equipment – in line of sight from the blast.
Effects would cascade across the country: Business investment stops with the result of massive unemployment; there is no food, clean water, fuel or electric power and perhaps worst of all, no supplies or equipment to repair or replace damaged components. Social security checks remain unsent, ATMs go dark, transportation and communications systems are shattered. The police would be overwhelmed, the worst elements in society ascendant.
No matter where you lived in the United States your life would change precipitously in mere hours; disaster would visit in only a few days."

"Fifty years ago it was not Sputnik itself that sent a dire chill of warning around the world; it was the capability of the rocket that launched Sputnik. The rocket that lofted Sputnik into orbit could also serve as an ICBM. Yet for all its rhetoric, the Soviet Union was essentially a rational power that recognized the threat of mutual destruction and thus never stepped to the edge.
The world is different today. Intercontinental range missiles tipped with nuclear weapons in the hands of leaders driven by fanaticism, leaders that support global terrorism, leaders that have made repeated threats that they will seek our annihilation can now at last achieve their dream of our annihilation in a matter of minutes.
Two things need to be done now and without delay:
1. Make clear in the strongest of terms that if a rocket is launched by either Iran or North Korea on a trajectory headed towards the territory of the United States, we will shoot it down.
2. Funding for EMP defense must be a top national priority. To downgrade or halt our missile defense program, which after twenty five years of research is at last becoming viable, would be an action of criminal negligence.
Surely, with such a threat confronting us, a fair and open debate, with full public access and the setting aside of partisan politics, is in order. America’s survival, your survival, and your family’s survival might very well depend on it."

We have repeatedly called for such a debate over the last few years, and particularly during the presidential debates, with no results. You can see a number of these articles at WMDterror.com, where both civilian and military strategists focus on exactly this kind of problem. However, the policy Gingrich proposes is not strong enough. Here is what we said on that, as stated in our article, "Congress to See Jihad Film", posted at WMDterror on March 21, 2009.
"As Sam Harris wrote in, " End of Faith", "We are at war with Islam. It may not serve our immediate foreign policy objectives for our political leaders to openly acknowledge this fact, but it is unambiguously the truth. It is not true that we are at war with an otherwise ‘peaceful religion’ that has been ‘hijacked’ by extremists. We are at war with precisely the vision of life that is prescribed to all Muslims in the Koran. "
This statement points to the most crucial movement that must take place, the shifting of the focus from non-states and therefore invulnerable actors like bin Laden, to recognizing Islam as the root cause of terrorism, placing any number of Muslim nations within our sights. This then becomes the basis for a renewed policy of mutually assured destruction. The president can then do what must be done. Warn the world that there is something wrong, something sub-moral and a threat to humanity about Islam. That it poses a threat to the entire non-Muslim world, and therefore he is issuing a warning to the Muslim world that any attack on America will be met with catastrophic retaliation against select areas of the Muslim world ."

"Iran has carried out missile tests for what could be a plan for a nuclear strike on the United States, the head of a national security panel has warned. One group of tests that troubled Graham, the former White House science adviser under President Ronald Reagan, were successful efforts to launch a Scud missile from a platform in the Caspian Sea. Another troubling group of tests involved Shahab-3 launches where the Iranians "detonated the warhead near apogee, not over the target area where the thing would eventually land, but at altitude,” Graham said. “Why would they do that?” Graham chairs the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack, a blue-ribbon panel established by Congress in 2001.
“The only plausible explanation we can find is that the Iranians are figuring out how to launch a missile from a ship and get it up to altitude and then detonate it,” he said. “And that’s exactly what you would do if you had a nuclear weapon on a Scud or a Shahab-3 or other missile, and you wanted to explode it over the United States.”
"If even a crude nuclear weapon were detonated anywhere between 40 kilometers to 400 kilometers above the earth, in a split-second it would generate an electro-magnetic pulse [EMP] that would cripple military and civilian communications, power, transportation, water, food, and other infrastructure," the report warned. Within a week or two of the attack, people would start dying, Graham says. Asked just how many Americans would die if Iran were to launch the EMP attack it appears to be preparing, Graham gave a chilling reply. “I’d have to say that 70 to 90 percent of the population would not be sustainable after this kind of attack,”
In his recent congressional testimony, Graham revealed that Iranian military journals, translated by the CIA at his commission’s request, “explicitly discuss a nuclear EMP attack that would gravely harm the United States.”
Iran could put a Scud missile on board a cargo ship and launch from the commercial sea lanes off America’s coasts.The only thing Iran is lacking for an effective EMP attack is a nuclear warhead, and no one knows with any certainty when that will occur. The latest U.S. intelligence estimate states that Iran could acquire the fissile material for a nuclear weapon as early as 2009.
The only way the United States could credibly threaten an Iranian missile strike would be to deploy effective national missile defenses. Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, a long-standing champion of missile defense, told the Claremont conference on Friday that Sen. Obama has opposed missile defense tooth and nail and as president would cut funding for these programs dramatically.
“Senator Obama has been quoted as saying, ‘I don’t agree with a missile defense system,’ and that we can cut $10 billion of the research out — never mind, as I say, that the entire budget is $9.6 billion.” Kyl said.

LARRY KING: Bob Salas is a former captain of the U.S. Air Force. He was at Malstrom Air Force Base in 1967, where there were claims that a UFO caused missiles to malfunction. SALAS: I was on duty as a missile launch officer. First, I get one call saying that they're seeing strange lights flying in the sky. About five minutes later ... the flight security controller calls down and says he's looking at a glowing red object, very large, hovering over the front gate. Within seconds of that call, my missiles start shutting down. I recall losing all 10 of them. KING: Bob Jamison you were there too, right? JAMISON: My job as a target officer was to bring them back up. KING: Is it possible they just malfunctioned? JAMISON: Very rarely does a missile malfunction. Much more rare would be two at the same time. But never ten.
The following if from the extensive testimony from military personnel that can be seen by going to google.com, input "Robert Salas," plus the item "The Malmstrom AFB UFO/Missile Incident." Here is the most important part of what Salas said:
" I was on duty as a Deputy Missile Combat Crew Commander below ground in the LCC capsule. One of the airmen outside the capsule saw what at first appeared to be a star begin to zig-zag across the sky. Then he saw another light do the same thing., and this time it was larger and closer. He asked his Flight Security Controller, in charge of Launch Control Center site security to come and take a look. They both stood there watching the lights streak directly above them, stop, change directions at high speed and return overhead. When it was reportd to me that a UFO was hovering outside the front gate I immediatlely went over to my commander, Lt. Fred Meiwald to brief him about what was happening topside. In the middle of this conversation, we both heard the first alarm klaxon resound through the confined space of the capsule, and both immediately looked over at the panel of annunciator lights at the Commander's station. A "No-Go" light and two red security lights were lit indicating problems at one of our missile sites. Fred jumped up to query the system to determine the cause of the problem. Before he could do so, another alarm went off at another site, then another and another simultaneously. Within the next few seconds, we had lost eight missiles to an inoperable position.
An in-depth post incident investigation of the E-Flight incident was undertaken. Full-scale on-site and laboratory tests at the Boeing Company's Seattle plant were conducted. Declassified Strategic Missile Wing documents and interviews with ex-Boeing engineers who conducted tests following the E-Flight Incident investigation confirm that no cause for the missile shutdowns was ever found. Robert Kaminski was the Boeing Company engineering team leader for this investigation. Kaminski stated that after all the tests were done, "There were no significant failures, engineering data or findings that could explain how ten missiles were knocked off alert. ," and " ...there was no technical explanation that could explain the event."
Others on the engineering team checked other possibilities. Lightning and problems in the commercial power system were acquitted as the source of the problem. William Dutton, another Boeing Companhy engineer, checked commercial power interruptions and transients and stated: "No anomalies were found in this area." Several military activities and other engineering firms participated in the investigation, but no positive cause for the shutdowns was ever found, despite extensive and concentrated effrort.
One conclusion was that the only way a pulse or (electrical) noise could be sent in from outside the shielded system was through an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from an unknown source. The technology of the day made generating an EMP of sufficient magnitude to enter the shielded system a very difficult proposition, requiring large, heavy, bulky equipment.The source of the actual pulse that caused the missile shutdowns remains a mystery to this day.
It is established fact that a large number of Air Force personnel reported sighting UFOs at the time many of our strategic missiles became unlaunchable. The incidents described above clearly had national security implications. In one previously classified message, SAC headquarters described the E-Flight incident as: loss of strategic alert of all ten missiles within ten seconds of each other for no apparent reason and a
cause for great concern to SAC headquarters."
There is a great discrepancey between the United States Air Force's public position relative to the UFOs and national security, and the established facts in this case. We hope that the Secretary of the Air Force will search for, declassify, and release all information on this case."

Another plea for transparency appears, many years later, in the conclusion of "Investigation and Photo Analysis" by Dr. Bruce S. Maccabee, a forty page scientific analysis of a preceeding 265 pages describing the incredibile events that occured involving the sighting of UFOs at Gulf Breeze, Florida. In "The Gulf Breeze Sightings" , Ed and Frances Walters present the most stunning and persuasive UFO story told to date, with the clearest, most detailed UFO photographs ever taken in U.S. history. With such startling photographic evidence, this is an absolutely riveting firsthand account of the Gulf Breeze UFO sightings as told by two of the central witnesses. Dr. Maccabee has a Ph.D in physics and for sixteen years served in the United States government as a research physicist. in the area of the Strategic Defense Initiative. His investigation of this case included many personal interviews with the witnesses, on-site inspections, and photographic analysis, including computer-aided technques. In concluding he said:
"I have concluded that these is no evidence of a hoax and that the photos in this book are authentic. They show unconventional aerial craft that have appeared over Gulf Breeze, Florida and surrounding areas.Having studied this for over a year I have concluded that the photos are proof of the existence of UFOs.
UFO sightings have been reported since the late 1940s. In the intervening years the reports of hundreds of honest people have been ignored or even publicly disputed and disparaged because of a lack of throroughly convincing proof that true UFOs were actually flying through our atmoshere. Now, however, the proof is here.
Now is the time to begin reexamining the situation. Now is the time for us to finally learn what has been happening throughout the world for the last forty-odd years. And now is the time to prepare for what the future has in store for the whole human race."
Included in the material on this subject available on the Internet is a compilaton of accounts by witnesses at nuclear sites throughout America. Robert L. Hastings sums the situation up in this introduction to his compilation:
"Although the vast majority of Americans are completely unaware of its existence, the UFO/Nukes Connection is now remarkably well-documented. Air Force, FBI, and CIA files, declassified via the Freedom of Information Act establish a convincing, ongoing pattern of UFO activity at U.S. nuclear weapons sites extending back to December, 1948
For more than 30 years I have beern interviewing former and retired U.S. Air Force personnel regarding their direct or indirect involvement in nuclear weapons-related UFO sighting incidents. These individuals - from retired colonels to former airmen - report extraordinary encounters which have obvious national security implications. The events they describe leave little doubt that our nuclear weapons program is an ongoing source of interest to someone possessing vastly superior technology. Significantly, the reported UFO activity occasionally transcends mere surveillance and appears to involve direct and unambiguous interference with our strategic weapons systems."
The Salas and the Maccabee pleas for transparency at this time is especially important when you put together three facts. The extremely high probability, that many, including myself, would call evidence, that UFOs exist, the high probablity that they can demobilize a nuclear missile, as clearly happened at Malmstrom, and the evidence that Iran may be working on bringing about an electromagnetic pulse over America.
With the years of monitoring of earth by those in the UFOs it is certain that they are aware of the geopolitical tensions here. Are they neutral or do they take sides? If they take sides they could neutralize the nuclear weapons of one side in a conflict, leaving the other side helpless. Or, neither side could know for certainty that a launch would actually occur. Such uncertainty could introduce new caution and reason into world affairs. Just raising the possibility of such senarios by America telling the world that UFOs with such capabilities in all probability do exist, might help change the geopolitical equation for the better. In any case, what the American government might know, indeed, what is known by all world goverments, should be placed, and kept, before the international public and considered, if warrented, in all discussion about nuclear threat.
It's true, we do not know the range of UFO capabilities, they may be able to paralyze fixed nuclear sites, but not be able to locate and demobilize small portable devices. But retaliation for attacks by these would probably involve long-range ICBMs that would arise out of silos, or be visible from launchers, and so the threat of UFO paralysis involving electromagnetic pulse would still be relevant in any pre-attack planning.

In Februrary of 2007 we posted an article on WMDterror.com titled, "Just Sitting Here -Waiting." It dealt with the high probability that nothing could be done about nuclear prolifiration, especially as regards Iran, such that in the long run all we are doing is just sitting here waiting for disaster. In the above there may be some hope that by interjecting these new facts about UFOs this might serve to bring about new stability into the world, while at the same time, of course, raising the awesome question of where did these crafts come from.
Many of you have connections with reporters, government officials, and agencies such as Homeland Security. Please do what you can to get this thesis to their attention. What has to happen is that the government and the media let the nation and the world know everything that is known about the UFO/Nuke Connection.

Another, chillingly accurate, fictional scenario of what would happen in the case of an electromagnetic pulse is found in the otherwise non-fictional book, "Showdown With Nuclear Iran", by Michael D. Evans, the book we have been recommending as the most important book one can read on the looming world crisis. Incidentally, in this book you will read some strange things about the belief of Iranian Shia leaders, particularly Ahmadinejad, in the need to create nuclear chaos to bring about the return of the Mahdi, the Twelfth Inman , who disappeared centuries ago down a well in Qom, Iran. This can be taken seriously. In the 14th printing in 1958 of a 1924 classic on world religions ,"The World's Living Religions, " by Robert Hume, we read, "A common belief among Shia Muslims is that the twelfth Imam disappeared , but that he will return again "

"The "Shadow-3" one of Nabih Osmani's prized new container ships, had dropped anchor outside of the Port of New York just as darkness fell. Sailing under the Panamanian flag afforded a certain measure of anonymity and blurred the paper trail that could lead back to its Pakistani owners. Hidden aboard the ship in a specially-built lead-lined container was the revolution's gift to the American people.
Two team memberrs moved to the panel that controlled the hydraulic door on the special container. As it swung up and out of the way, a fourth man raced inside and eased into the seat of the Russian-built missile launcher, technically identified as an MAZ 534 transport erector launcher. As the huge launcher crept slowly forward, the erector began its slow rise, lifting the fifty-three-foot-long Shahab-3 missile skyward.
To the unsuspecting population across the northeastern United States, it was simply six o'clock on another mundane Wednesday morning in April. Schoolchildren were being roused from their warm beds, moms were setting out cereal bowls, and making lunches, dads were grabbing their first cup of coffee before the long commute to work. People readied for their workday all across the eastern seaboard.
At exactly 6:30 a.m. EST the word was given to ignite the solid-fuel missile . With the push of a button, the missile roared to life and slowly lifted from the ship's deck. The entire crew aboard the ship gathered on the deck .Unrolling their prayer mats, each man faced Mecca and began to pray. As the missile roared into the air the men cried as one,"Allah Akbar !" ! Death to America ! The cry that begins every meeting of the Iranian Parliament.
In less than a second after the launch , alarm bells went off in the Cheyenne Mountains Operation Center of the North American Areospace Defense Command. (NORAD) On the large central display, the point of the launch in the Atlantic was flashing. The center's computers displayed the trajectory and impact point - near the western Beltway of Washington, D.C.. Impact time was predicted at three minutes , forty-nine seconds from launch.
Air Force Brigadier General Jack Simpson, the chief duty officer , immediately called Admiral Timothy Keating, the commander of NORAD who was out of the center at the moment, but nearby. Keating ordered Simpson to call the White House immediately, as well as the Chief Duty Officer at the Pentagon. Alerted by the call , the president's chief of staff rose from his desk to head toward the Oval Office, rushing to alert the president. But time had run out.
The Shehab -3 missile carried a one-ton 550-kiloton enriched -uranium nuclear warhead. Traveling at a speed of 4,300 miles per hour , the Shahab-3 traveled for 180 seconds before detonatng at an altitude of nearly 80,000 feet, some fifteen miles above Washington, DC..In scientific circles, the missile-one detonation was known as an EMP attack, or Electromagnetic Pulse. The warhead had detonated above the earth as programmed , instantly producing a barrage of gamma rays that radiated down to the earth's surface at the speed of light. Billions of electrons were scattered at high energies, ionizing the atmosphere and generating a powerful electrical field. The EMP was so brief a flash that no damage was done to the human bodies or the buildings through which the pulse passed. In a radius moving out from Washington the EMP reached instantly across a radius of several hundred miles, as far as the outskirts of Boston. Instantly, the pulse destroyed all generators within a direct line of sight. As failures in the electric grid cascaded in a matter of minutes every electrical grid covering Washington, Philadelphia, and New York was knocked offline.The White House, the Pentagon, the CIA, and the National Security Agency were rendered inoperable.
Every computer in the blast radius went dark in a flash. Hundreds of thousands of people were trapped in elevators. Chain-reaction car accidents were repeated across the northeastern section of the country as every traffic light in Washington, Philadelphia and New York as well as the countryside and small towns in between, went dead. Most cars in the blast radius came to abrupt halts as the electronics ceased to work.
Cell phones in the area affected by the blast became worthless, and military high-priority top-secret systems were useless, including those connecting out of the CIA and National Security Agency. Reaching NORAD in Washington was impossible. Nothing that depended on electricity or electronics worked. In the flash of an instant, cities in the northeastern United States went black, rendering some 150 years of technological advancement worthless. Cities were reduced to a technological state that pre-dated the invention of the telephone or the light bulb. Hospital patients died when doctors were stopped in mid-operation and surgical equipment, including respirators, quit functioning. Thousands of airline passengers fell miles to frightful deaths as airline engines flying through this zone failed and sophisticated jetliners fell from high atlitudes. Power failures in the eastern US were triggering system failures all the way to Canada.
The panic was immediate. All command communications reaching from Washington to our military forces around the world just shut down. The world's superpower with its advanced technological prowess was rendered helpless by the explosion of one relatively low-yield nuclear warhead high over Washington.
Nationwide panic followed quickly.With no communications, transportation, refrigeration, water resources, or medical help, a crisis of pandemic proportions gripped the United States. Nobody in America was communicating above the distance the sound of their voices would carry.
In Israel, Tel Aviv had been vaporized. The "Sampson Option" was implemented.The nuclear warhead-laden missiles were now ascending from their silos, their targets known only to the prime minister and his closest advisors. Dimona, Project 700, the Zechariah Project, the Temple Weapons , each a part of Israel's vast nuclear arsenal, were destined for all-out retaliation.
