For those people who can no longer access orkut because their company’s MIS departments have wised up, or those who are sad and lonely, and feeling a lack of desi companionship, there is good news – www.desitwist.com is a place to go when you want to “make friendships”.

One of the good things about this website is the fact that you don’t have to spend hours filling in a lengthy form in order to become a registered user – it barely takes a minute or two, depending on your typing speed.

The website boasts a comparatively high number of registered users. For once, the forums are utilised well with some interesting discussions that occasionally crop up.

There are a number of forums which can be viewed, and include diverse topics such as love and relationships, teen talk, debates, poetry and literature and even a philosophical section. The poetry section, for instance, has some quite earnest pieces, where one member, for example, writes poetry for her long lost beloved. But wait, it gets better. You don’t necessarily have to log in as a member on this website just to be a part of it – rather you can have a bit of fun going through posts and sniggering over some of the conversations and ‘poetry’.

However, that is not to say that all the posts on the forums are to be sneered at. Some deal with pertinent and thought-provoking subjects. So who knows, you may actually be able to find like-minded people or perhaps even your soul mate here!

In addition to the forums, the website also has some ingenious features. For instance, the calendar allows you to view your desitwist pals’ birthdays, and there’s actually a statistics section that highlights certain ‘credentials’, such as ‘most popular pal’, among others.

And that’s not all – there are also wallpapers of your favourite Bollywood idols, music videos and songs available for download, as well as an actual desitwist toolbar.
