North of Watford Gap
A close up view of the north

The new travel book from the author of ‘Return to Oz’. In this long awaited travelogue, John sets out to discover just what lies behind the preconceptions so commonly held about the NORTH
Following the success of Return to OZ, John Brown has come up with another clever and incisive page turner This time, instead of our Antipodean friends being the subject of his scrutiny, it's we Brits who come under his witty Radar.

Always with an eye for the unusual and sometimes plain absurd, John sets off from his native Cheshire on a cheeky journey through the valleys and cities of Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumberland, Tynside, Cumbria and eventually returning via Merseyside to Cheshire.

In this most enjoyable of travelogues, he delves into the hidden tunnels of Liverpool, takes tea on the original station set of Brief Encounter, follows in the footsteps of Agatha Christie in Harrogate, then rides the train featured in the Railway Children and visits the New Morecambe, before getting lost on Tyneside and nearly coming to a sticky end in Alderley Edge. Packed with information and enough banter to satisfy even the staunchest critic – I think this one could be a real winner.

John’s writing is very much in the Bill Bryson, Stuart Maconie style, light of touch, well researched and delivered with that twist of irony you would expect from this writer.
