60 SECOND INTERVIEW WITH FLUENTINTUITION
In celebration of the European Day of Languages,Fluentintuition, the brand new company offering a fresh approach to language learning, opens its doors to the public this week with an innovative range of events and courses set to fire your desire. Founder, Nikki Oliver Pentucci, has invested a passion for language, life and culture and combined it with adult learning expertise to develop an innovative autumn programme inspired by the dolce vita!
Why did you decide to set up Fluentintuition?
Learning a language can be exciting and great fun too. Today so many people think of language learning as dull or challenging, but it needn't be that way. Languages are the spice of life and that kick of communication when it all comes together can be exhilarating. I wanted to offer learning, or better still, red letter day language experiences that would reflect this. After many years in the field, working with prestigious names such Ferrari UK, Amec,Procter & Gamble, Global Solutions, Strodes College,Brooklands College and talented British violinist Chloe Hanslip, I felt something was missing.I set up Fluentintuition because I wanted to create a buzzy, vibrant place where people would want to get together to share the good things in life – food, wine, music, theatre, culture, travel, the exotic.
What language events and courses do you offer?
We offer a variety of languages and formats to suit everyone’s differing needs. Our programme stretches from Mandarin, Russian, to even Danish;from beginners to advanced level, one-off insight days, ’weekenders’ to eleven week courses,and much more besides. Whether you want to practise your Elisir d’amor or MacBeth arias, explore otherworld lifestyles, have a chat, read a good book, learn how to deal with the builders, network for business or just make the most of your city break, there's a course designed with you in mind. In fact, for the more adventurous, we even have one day Cottagework experiences that allow you to pick up some basic Italian whilst learning how to make pizza in our unique wood-fired pizza oven!
Who would benefit most from your events and courses?
Naturally, anyone can benefit from learning a language, there’s so much to gain in all sorts of ways, and that’s really why I believe fluency in language means fluency in life. That said, here at Fluentintuition events and courses are tailored towards adult language enthusiasts, so the ‘16 plusses’ will benefit most from our programmes. This is because we've actually created the courses especially with adult learners in mind, we pride ourselves on our adult learning expertise, so we know about their specific needs and have made sure we cater to these.
So, what makes teaching adults different?
Adults come with their own baggage and experience. A desire to achieve and be the best you can is just part of a bigger picture. Then again, learning’s got to be relevant and practical – after all, we’re busy people! We have enquiring minds, we’re problem – solvers, we’re motivated, passionate, committed and prepared to dig deep to get where we want to be. This of course is more challenging for the facilitator or trainer, but it‘s far more rewarding. And what journeys we make! I’ll never forget one gent whose wife is of Italian – Greek origin. He learnt Italian so he could help her trace back her family history. In completing the course he was able to go to Italy and search through archives, get local assistance and in the end, complete her family history. Amazing!
What makes you good at what you do?
I love learning! If you’re not captivated by what you’re doing there’s no point in being there. Learners know that. You don’t have to be a maestro to experience the vibe communicated at a great concert. It’s all about wanting to communicate. And that brings us back first and foremost, to our passion for languages. Here at Fluentintuition, not only do we care, but we enjoy what we do and that goes a long way towards providing the learner with a better experience.
What makes your courses different?
We focus on three key things: providing great courses that get people excited about learning a language; having small groups to ensure more talk time and more personalised attention; and a great team of tutors with adult learning experience and have enthusiasm for what they do. As well as this, we ensure all our locations are comfortable, modern and relaxed so that you can enjoy the experience!
