Asia Volunteer - Orphanage Homes in Nepal

Our experiences with INFO Nepal - Working in an orphanage - July 2006

Our first week was an introduction in Nepali culture, which is very different from our hometown culture. This was a very important and nice week, we've seen a lot of things: first we went for some sightseeing, learned Nepali language and ate Dhal Bhat for the first time. We met other volunteers, Jeremy and Marcelle, who were great company. With the four of use we went for village training to Dhulikel. We experienced real village life, which was enjoyable but we also had little problems with getting used to this primitive culture. But we are really glad that we had a chance to see how these people live. They were very kind to us, when we left they had a little ceremony to say goodbye. After that, we spent a weekend in Chitwan, which was great! We stayed in a luxury resort and spent a lot of time in the jungle park. We rest a lot, so after that we could make a fresh start with volunteering. We stayed for two weeks in the Humanitarion Concern Centre, an orphanage in Kathmandu Valley. There live 32 children here, a father and mother take care of them. The children are very nice and look happy. We spent a lot of time playing, and helping them with English language. We went to church with the children, and played bingo almost everyday. We also tried to clean up the place, but this was sometimes very difficult. There is not enough money to buy stuff for cleaning, and the people there are not used to cleaning so much. We think it is very important to keep improving the hygiene. A lot of children were sick during our two weeks, and we think that was because of this lack of hygiene and lack of nutritional food.

We want to thank INFO Nepal, Marcelle, Jeremy and Ann for these three marvellous weeks in which we learned so much! And also we want to thank the mother of the orphanage for taking care of us.
