URBAN ARTISTS AND FAMOUS ACTRESS TO FEATURE IN CORNISH SCHOOL’S SECRET ART AUCTION
Art collectors and bargain hunters are eagerly anticipating a charity exhibition and auction that will feature, in anonymity, the creative work of Cornish school-children, their parents, teachers and dinner-ladies, alongside that of more than 30 local and nationally-acclaimed professionals, including Janet Judge, David Hosking, Andrew Giddens, Lucie Bray and Steve Slimm. In addition, the organisers of the Trannack School Secret Art Exhibition (3rd & 4th October) and Auction (7th October) have also revealed that artwork by internationally-recognised contemporary street artists ‘Pure Evil’ and ‘Dead Beat Donny’ will also be featured, along with a piece by actress Jenny Agutter of The Railway Children fame.
Based on the annual secret art sale held by the Royal College of Art in London (which attracts the likes of Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin), the Trannack School Secret Art Exhibition and Auction is being hosted by the Trevarno Estate and Gardens near Helston, with all profits going to the Parents and Friends of Trannack Community School (PFTC) to enable them to purchase educational resources for the small rural school. The latest additions to the collection are bound to further stimulate interest in the auction with a number of serious collectors and art-lovers already planning to attend.
There has been a huge amount of interest in the auction, and we are delighted that so many artists have agreed to take part.” says PFTC member Vicky Wiltshire, who has helped to organise the event. “We have had inquiries from all around the country. The children are very excited and we have received an enormous amount of support, enthusiasm and encouragement not just from the artists – but from everyone who has been involved in our project”.
The event has already received the support of a number of local businesses. Aside from Trevarno, which is hosting the exhibition and auction free of charge, Truro Arts, and also Arts and Graphics in Redruth have donated the art materials, and David Lay of Lay’s Fine Art Valuers & Auctioneers of Penzance has volunteered to conduct the sale. Southern England Farms have sponsored the printing costs, and a number of the professional artists taking part, including Janet Judge, Lucy Brown, and Porthleven-based 3-D designers Will and Sam Boex, visited the school last term to host workshops in their preferred medium.
“I think that the secret art sale is a great idea,” says Jenny Agutter. “People should buy because they are touched by something they see a rather than knowing the history. Children are often more immediate and respond to what they feel about something when they paint.”
Trevarno’s General Manager Richard Cox adds “The standard of work is clearly going to be incredibly high and it’s great that so many people are working to help Trannack – which is a lovely school. We can’t wait for the event.”
