JUNE 2006 PRESS RELEASE - For immediate release
“Award Winning Illustrator Returns to Oil and Canvas”
London, 19 - 24 June 2006
Award winning Illustrator, Glen Viljoen, will be presenting his first solo exhibition
“A volatile inclination toward subject, colour and texture” at the Woburn Gallery, Woburn Walk, London, WC1H 0JL.
As an Illustrator, Glen has developed a formidable clientele from global giants such as Unilever, General Mills and Cereal Partners to individual private collectors – Volvic, Toys'R'Us - Europe, Sainsbury's, Nokia, FIFA, Spar, The NHS, The Welsh Assembly, Early Learning Centre, Tesco's. Marks & Spencers, the BBC, Aldi, Disney and Ravensburger are just some of the most recent brands Glen has worked on… the list goes on. His work has been seen on the Volvic Water bottle, the new Ambrosia range, Colgate, the Sainsbury’s Blue Parrot Range, Golden Nuggets to name but a few. In 2002, Glen was co-awarded a Welsh BAFTA for the best promotional title sequence for the S4C Children’s Channel.
After 16 years as an accomplished illustrator, Glen is returning to his first love, oils and canvas. In this exhibition he is presenting 21 of his recent works. These include images of African wild life and contemporary nudes.
The wildlife images are a reflection of the artist’s African heritage. His animals are painted in both a classical style with incredible accuracy and in a contemporary and conflicting style which evokes an overwhelming sense of the great Dark Continent. The ‘pièce de résistance’ of this Exhibition is a large painting notably called ‘Elephant’. His wildlife paintings procure a strong focal point using space, composition, and light and dark.
The beautifully evocative nudes are painted in a flamboyant contemporary style using both paintbrushes and palette knives. The contrasting styles used in these works are a sharp revolt against the artist’s commercial illustration work. Each piece is it’s own testament to the philosophy which has inspired the artist:
“Art is the bias essence that prescribes emotional pleasure and displeasure toward all things. In the eye of the beginner there are many stimulants to direct the imagination, to condemn or revere. The tainted eye, mercilessly selective. Art is always permeating, compelling us to learn and to see again. A visual harmonious intuition subtle enough to act upon.”
Works will be exhibited at the Woburn Gallery from 19-24 June. The gallery will be open for public viewings from 10am-7pm on Monday to Friday and 10-4pm on Saturday. There will be a private viewing from 7pm-10pm on Thursday, 22 June.
