The number of .com domain names registered worldwide now exceeds Internet boom levels

London, England – 30th July, 2003.

Just when you thought the Internet boom was over, Virtual Internet, a leading European provider of business web hosting, has identified the highest level of .com domain name registrations ever. According to Virtual Internet’s figures, which are based upon its global monitoring tools, there are now 23,795,131 .com domain names registered around the world, 477,657 more .com names than at the height of registrations in October 2001.

At its lowest point following the internet gold-rush the number of .com’s registered on the Global DNS fell to 21.1million on 26/7/02. Since then .com domain names have been on a steady climb to reach their peak today. Virtual Internet sights the increasing importance of the Internet to business users as the reason for this increase:

“Having a solid online presence is not a fad, it is a must for both small businesses and corporations alike. Our customers are hosting sites and applications because it is making them money – whether directly through online sales or indirectly through increased leads”, commented Mike Gordon, MD Virtual Internet.

The rise in .com registrations highlights its dominance as the gTLD of choice. Almost 50% of all domain names registered around the world are .com top-level domains. The news also sends a signal to budding entrepreneurs and those sitting on older .com domain name registrations of the need to act fast at renewing their names. Businesses can no longer afford to let a name lapse in the hope to re-register it again in months to come.

“As a large hosting provider our business very much reflects the mood of the wider business market. An increasing number of customers are using our advanced hosting solutions this year because the Internet has become a critical business tool - this bodes well for business in 2004. And, what is good news for the domain name and hosting industry is that this is a steady, sustained increase and not a bubble.”
