Macvisionaries - providing innovative solutions for blind Macintosh users
Added : ( May 2005 )
Introduction - MacVisionaries is a UK company specialising in products and services to help blind people to use the Apple Macintosh computing platform.
With the release of Mac OS 10.4 Apple have produced the first ever computer that is usable by blind people out of the box, eliminating the need to purchase expensive screen reading software. We at Macvisionaries are very excited about this development, and our aim is to provide help to users switching to Mac OS X in the form of additional software required by the blind, audio tutorials and an online community.
It's been a whole month since Tiger was let out of its cage, and since MacVisionaries was born. Realising this, we sat down to think how far we'd come since April 29...
* Our main focus has been the Discuss mailing list. We're pleased to report that this has been an astounding success - we now have members from at least eight different countries, including some well-known names from the access technology industry. We're really pleased with the way this has taken off, and the wealth of knowledge that has been exchanged. IN fact, we just looked and in the past month 1332 messages have been posted (that's about 44 a day!). We've also added a couple of special-interest lists and made a few small changes to help manage the flow of traffic.
* We also launched the MacVisionaries Switch Counter, encouraging VoiceOver users to stand up and be counted. The count stands at 36 (this means that on average every day at least one person bought a Mac or a copy of Tiger just to get VoiceOver - impressive).
* Finally, we introduced our unique Accessibility Testing service, and some more information on the web site which should help new users get started with the Mac, and started selling the great new voices from Cepstral.
* So, where are we going in the next month? The main focus of the next month will be the audio tutorial. We're working hard to bring you a tutorial that people can listen to and learn how to use VoiceOver and your Mac. Further down the road, we also have plans to bring you new voices, and other applications to help you make the most of your Mac. Here's to a prosperous 2005!
