Log cabins or sheds?
Added : ( May 2005 )
With so many companies jumping on the log cabin bandwagon, how is it possible to choose the right one?
"It's all comes down to the quality of the timber" says Mark Barber of Scandinavian Log Cabins Direct. "Many companies make their cabins from wood that comes from central and southern Europe where the wood grows quickly and is cheap. But this comes at a price - the wood is also soft and cracks and warps easily, so your nice new cabin soon becomes as airtight as a sieve"
Scandinavian Log Cabins make their cabins only from Northern Scandinavian Pine where the timber grows so slowly the trees reach an age of 120 years before harvesting. That way it is possible to use half logs so that any cracks that do appear face inwards.
"Most of our cabins are still standing after many years" says Mr Barber "In fact our cabins are so solid that more and more people are using this traditional technique to build their homes"
His advice is to compare the wall thickness of cabins before you buy - that £1025 'bargain' often turns out to be more expensive when you consider the 28mm wall thickness is 6mm less than a similar cabin priced at £975
