About Ryby Stonehouse:
Ryby Stonehouse’s diving experience began in 1984 with his first dive. Ten years later he qualified as a Divemaster before becoming a qualified Diving Instructor in 1997.
In 2001 Ryby earned his place through a competitive application process examining his experience and training goals, in order to achieve recreational scuba diving’s highest and most respected rating of PADI Course Director. Within five years he was one of the first PADI Course Directors to be awarded the prestigious platinum rating.
In the following years, Ryby Stonehouse continued to add to his scuba diving experience and achievements, qualifying as a Tec Instructor Trainer in 2004. He then qualified as a Rebreather Instructor, becoming the first PADI Instructor to instruct students on the Hollis Prism2 Rebreather.
Ryby’s list of firsts continued, as he became established as the very first UK Instructor Trainer in the new PADI Sidemount Course in 2008, introducing it to the UK.
With experience of running successful dive tours since 1997, Ryby has taught students, and organised and guided trips worldwide including the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, African, and South East Asia and the Pacific.
Since 1997, he has completed well over 10,000 dives, certified more than 1800 individual students, and issued over 2000 instructor-level certificates.

BRUSSELS, 24 January 2022 – Households in Europe need revamped debt relief measures to better cope with over-indebtedness, but rules in Europe may not keep them out of a modern-day version of debtor’s prison.
A new Finance Watch report “From debtor prisons to being prisoners of debt” shows that consumers in the European Union face unequal access to relief when personal debts outstrip ability to pay them. The over-indebted get little help from the continent’s patchy mix of insolvency frameworks, which lack a standard set of rules. Lack of EU legislation implementing best practices makes it hard for people to seek debt relief, and ultimately hinders them from making a fresh start. What’s more, the complicated network of insolvency procedures also makes lenders hesitant to sell their credit products cross-border, stifling competition and limiting the EU goal of creating a strong, single market.
Finance Watch lead author Paul Fox commented: “A new beginning allows people to rejoin society both economically and socially, whereas the over-indebted rack up a huge bill for taxpayers. There is no economic or moral justification for leaving over-indebted people behind, pushing them into poverty. Policymakers need to take action now.”

Discharge issues around cancellation of a debt due to bankruptcy are particularly problematic across Europe, where the average debt discharge period is five years. Some EU Member States imprison those who fail to adhere to court-ordered repayment schedules in accordance with debt discharge agreements. Jail sentences can be passed regardless of reason, whether a debtor has refused to pay or simply cannot.
Finance Watch lead author Paul Fox commented: “Any discharge procedure beyond three years is not even close to helping people in the long run. Too often, debtors' assets are seized or part of their income is paid to creditors. This undermines their basic human right to a dignified life and snatches away any chance of a fresh start.”
**Calls for policy at European level, ending incarceration**
The need for sound consumer insolvency rules has long been recognised, but efforts to date have failed to ensure debtors have the ability to access relief procedures or to help them regain a sound financial footing. Yet 14 years ago, in 2007, Member States showed unanimous support for recommendations provided by the Council of Europe to address debt problems and over-indebtedness.
Despite calls at European level to fix the problem, barriers to access and discharge remain across the European Union. Two states simply have no consumer insolvency rules.
**Measures needed to address over-indebtedness**
A big proportion of Europe’s people struggle to repay their existing debts. Data show that 21.9% of people living in the European Union are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Some 32% say they cannot afford unforeseen expenses equal to one month’s income, according to 2019 data.
Compounding this, Europe’s consumer credit market in recent years has been awash with rampant irresponsible lending practices and a lack of regulation of risky new loan products such as payday loans and buy-now-pay-later schemes. Much of the blame falls on outdated consumer credit market rules now under review. To make matters worse, these unregulated risky loans have to a large part been mis-sold to low-income households, who are unable to afford the high interest and fees associated with these products.
**Over-indebtedness and human health**
Being over-indebted harms people’s health. A growing wealth of evidence suggests a relationship between financial difficulties and poor mental health. A 2019 study from the University of Singapore found that debt impairs decision-making and psychological functioning. The over-indebted are nine times more likely to suffer from mental and physical health issues, including clinical depression and diabetes and heart conditions than the general population. Common triggers of their over-indebtedness - such as job loss, divorce, illness, death in the family, and failure in business - may also continue to place a high mental burden on the individual. Finance Watch sees a moral obligation to build a new harmonised framework for personal insolvency.
Fox added: “The Covid crisis was an untimely blow for people living paycheck to paycheck.This problem appears to have been compounded by growing and widespread mis-selling of popular risky low-value loans to low-income households as these loans are currently not in scope of the Consumer Credit Directive.”

- UK Company Makes History with Largest Swedish Whisky Importation

A UK-based whisky brokerage has successfully shipped the largest single consignment of rare whisky casks from Sweden to Britain. New world whisky specialists Cask World recently announced the arrival of the 34 casks, holding thousands of litres of premium single malt from the renowned BOX Distillery, with the spirit - valued at approximately £1.2m - now continuing to mature in its new English home.
Whilst this shipment is significant in showing that trade with the EU can still be buoyant in the post-Brexit pandemic era, it also exemplifies growing global interest in non-Scotch whisky, with the spirit now increasingly in-bound to UK shores. Comparisons can be drawn with the new world wine revolution of recent decades, and Cask World have positioned themselves as pioneers of this movement. As a division of Rosewin Holdings PLC, this acquisition adds to their rapidly growing new world whisky portfolio, with the company proud to lay these barrels down alongside some of the incredible whiskies now being produced on all continents.
The pedigree and rarity of this shipment should not be underestimated. At the time these casks were filled, BOX was the world’s northernmost whisky distillery, sitting just inside the Arctic Circle at 63° North. A forerunner of the current Swedish whisky boom and renowned for its vision to be the first truly green whisky producer, BOX quickly gained recognition for the quality of its spirit, which uses pristine local spring water, excellent Swedish barley, and ultra-clean air. Additionally, the huge temperature fluctuations between summer and winter in the region cause unique interactions between the maturing liquid and the wood, all combining to give special depth and character to the BOX final product.
All filled between 2011-2015, the eldest barrels to have made the journey across the North Sea are just turning a decade old. These are also believed to be some of the final remaining stock filled under the BOX name (the producer changed to ‘High Coast’ following a naming dispute in 2018). When eventually bottled, they could therefore be the last in existence to bear the ‘Distilled at BOX Distillery, Sweden’ label.
Currently ranging from six to ten years old, this cask collection contains a broad array of exciting cask/spirit combinations. Cask World’s founder Daniel Monk explains:
“This is a true box of delights - we’ve got wood ranging from virgin American, German, French, and Swedish Oak through to ex-sherry, bourbon, port, Madeira, and even an ex-Laphroaig cask! And those barrels feature toasting and charring levels across the entire spectrum from light through to ‘high mocha’. 23 of the casks hold unpeated and 11 hold peated whisky. It could be said that this collection is a perfect microcosm of the wonderful variation and innovation we are now witnessing in the global whisky scene.”
BOX started producing in 2011, with their first offerings to the domestic market in 2014. The Swedes, a nation of discerning whisky lovers, reportedly snapped up the 11,500 bottles in minutes. A similar story ensued for all the distillery’s subsequent releases, with their slightly longer aged (up to six years old) and independent bottlings regularly achieving price points well in excess of £100. Indeed, High Coast have recently released their inaugural 10 year old bottling to the Swedish market (evidently using spirit distilled early in the BOX days) with an RRP. of £136 (SEK1650).
The above prices seem well justified, with the distillery winning a plethora of international awards under both the BOX and High Coast brands, such as their Best Swedish Single Malt for The Festival in 2017 and The Second Step Collection 01 in 2018 at the World Whiskies Awards. Their High Coast 63 (5 years old, £100) was awarded 91% by Whisky Saga with the comment, “Liquid magic from the wizards of the High Coast. This is how you do it!” To put this into perspective, Macallan’s Sherry Oak 18 year old (£300) scored 86%, and Highland Park’s 21 year old (£210) achieved 89%.
