American Society of Plastic Surgeons Reports Cosmetic Surgery on the Rise

Sep 03, 2019 (Investing Alerts) -- The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that cosmetic surgery is on the rise. An initial report from earlier in the year shows that nearly a quarter million more cosmetic procedures were performed in 2018 than in 2017.
There was more than 17.7 million minimally-invasive and surgical cosmetic procedures performed last year in the United States. The figure has risen over the past five years, with a rise in body-reshaping, liposuction and breast augmentation procedures.
Breast augmentation is experiencing a new trend, too. Last year, a total of 313,735 procedures were performed, up 4% from the year prior, in the breast augmentation field. Patients are choosing either breast implants or breast reduction.
“As popular as this surgery is, there are actually a number of benefits in seeking out quite the opposite procedure. Breast reduction surgery is just what it sounds like... decreasing the size of the breast,” claims Robert Meger, specialist in breast augmentation in Phoenix.
The top procedures performed last year also include liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and tummy tucks. Out of the 15.9 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed, the leading procedures include Botox, soft tissue injections, chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.
A rise in cosmetic surgery comes from an increase in surgical procedures on a surprising group: baby boomers. Surgeons are experiencing an increase in surgical procedure requests for people 55 and older. The baby boomer demographic is reentering the dating scene, with 20 million baby boomers on dating sites.
Doctors claim that baby boomers are trying to put their best face forward when entering the dating world. Small cosmetic tweaks are common, with 50,000 more people 55 or older choosing to have cosmetic surgery performed last year.
The divorce rate for baby boomers has doubled since the 90s, with more of the generation trying to find the confidence that they once had in their youth.
A study performed in the United Kingdom found that a person's self-esteem and religious beliefs are two key factors in whether the person would undergo cosmetic surgery during their lifetime.
The number of men seeking cosmetic procedures is also rising. Men are seeking liposuction, nose reshaping and Botox to try and turn back the clock. The number of people who received liposuction in 2018 rose by more than 12,000 compared to a year prior.
