Tech Support Scams on the Increase

Added: (Mon Jul 22 2019)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Once again, people in Britain are being swamped by phone calls from fraudsters impersonating technology companies. This type of scammer informs their victim that their computer has a virus or fault and that they are the only person who can fix it, thus using scare tactics to convince concerned device owners.
Victims are instructed to install software to repair the fault or remove the virus. This software in reality allows the scammer to access and control the device and all data stored within it. With this control, scammers may access passwords and other sensitive data as well as install viruses onto the device. By subsequently charging for their ‘services’, fraudsters can easily steal money from unwitting consumers. These calls, therefore, threaten both financial and personal safety.
When faced with such a situation, it is recommended to terminate the call immediately to ensure that fraudsters do not gain access to any personal data or bank details.
Given the importance of this issue, tellows, https://www.tellows.co.uk/, a platform for users to share unknown callers’ information and for reverse phone number search, has released an article describing in detail such tech support scams and advising how to avoid becoming a victim of them.
