Pressbox (Press Release) - Morris Miller has plenty to blow about.
But the celebrated trumpet player from Middlesex had to be prompted by his daughter before finally putting pen to paper to write his memoirs.
For decades the 91-year-old was in demand by bands and orchestras up and down the country for his skilful trumpet playing.
Since its publication Morris’ memoirs, Me and My Trumpet, has already reached number one in Amazon’s autobiography charts.
The great-grandfather admits if it wasn’t for his proud daughter’s persistence, it’s unlikely his story would ever have been told.
Morris explained: “The idea for Me and My Trumpet came from my daughter Anna.
“She also converted all of my longhand writing into a printable reading format, as well as exploring and implementing ideas on the layout.
“Anna also provided the corrections.”
Me and My Trumpet is a fascinating biography which tells of Morris’ formative years in Canada before moving to England to pursue a career in music at the age of 20.
Throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, he would play with some of the best-known bands and orchestras in the country.
Among the highlights for Morris are his times with Ted Heath’s big band and the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra in Manchester.
Me and My Trumpet provides an amusing and insightful look back at the dance hall days, and the characters who took to the stage each night to entertain.
Morris introduces readers to the conductors, the fellow players, the sound engineers and the audiences who danced the night away.
Since retiring from the bandstand Morris has written several short stories and even put his proud ethnic roots to use between 2013 and 2016 by translating important documents from Yiddish into English for the Jewish Heritage Centre archives in Winnipeg.
Morris, who lives in Northwood with his wife Peggy, has continued to write following the completion of Me and My Trumpet.
He added: “Sometimes I feel that I can usefully put pen to paper and I will immediately sit down at the dining room table.
“These sittings can last for up to six hours with hardly a break, but as often as not they will end with disappointing results and a numb bottom.”
Despite his occasional failed writing sessions, Morris is currently working on a second book.
