Strong month for salaries despite dip

Average salaries for a new travel job fell from April's record figure but still stood as the third highest number since the index began in 2012, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies registered with the companies during the month.

The monthly fall of 1.5 per cent (or £426) saw wages dip to £27,956, although the 12-month rolling average increased to +5.78 per cent, helped by a strong monthly increase in salaries for executive travel jobs (those paying £40,000 and above).

Salaries fell across the country in May although there were marked differences across the regions, with the south of the UK seeing a slim 0.46 per cent monthly dip and the north experiencing a much larger 5.56 per cent decrease.

Meanwhile, standard travel salaries (those paying below £40,000) fell back by 5.65 per cent to £24,296 in May. However, this was 1.01 per cent above the same month in 2018 and was up by a very strong 7.08 per cent on the rolling 12-month average.

Vacancy and candidate numbers improve

Despite remaining down year-on-year, the number of new vacancies rebounded strongly from last month’s falls with a 19 per cent increase in May, while there was also a 10 per cent monthly rise in new candidates registering their interest in finding a new travel job. Vacancy numbers rose to their highest level since January, while candidate volumes stood at their highest point since February.

Speaking about the stats, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: "The travel recruitment market remains quiet compared to previous years, but we were very pleased to see activity rebound last month both in terms of new candidates and new job vacancies. However, these were small improvements and we’re very keen to see further increases before the traditional late summer slowdown kicks in.

“Encouragingly, salaries remain very strong and have increased by nearly six per cent across the past year, so for those people who are considering a career move, there are clearly some very attractive travel roles available at the moment.”
