East London writer’s epic tale earns praise

Added: (Sat Apr 27 2019)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A New Year’s Day dare has led to a history graduate from East London embarking on an incredible journey into war-torn Europe of the past.
Gregory Figg has just completed the second part of his highly-anticipated thirteenth century epic series, Engines of Ascendency.
And yet again, like his series introductionary novel Threshold, Harbinger has also been met with entirely five-star reviews.
Gregory, who works for an IT company by day, admits his new-found fame as an author may never have happened – if he’d opted to learn a foreign language.
He said: “I was dared on New Year’s Day a few years ago to either write a book or learn a language.
“I chose the former, and things have really got out of hand since.
“I was relatively uninformed about late thirteenth and early fourteenth-century matters, but after two history degrees it was water off a duck’s back.
“I live for that sort of thing and often get quite carried away.
“Harbinger, like the previous book Threshold, is set mainly in England, Wales and France.
“It is a historical fiction but nonetheless basing the fiction in familiar locations makes the historical element of it more relatable and accessible.
“I want to give readers a sense of how life in these places, though ostensibly vastly different, was essentially similar to how we experience our own lives.”
Away from writing the former newspaper editor has completed the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge as well as scaling the actual Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings in New Zealand.
But most the 31-year-old’s time is now spent weaving fantastic storylines together as his Engines of Ascendency series takes shape.
Gregory added: “I have also begun a wiki for the series where parts of the research, character bios and book synopses can be found.
“If time were no object there would eventually be tens of Engines of Ascendency books.”
Readers have yet again been full of praise for the second instalment of the Engines of Ascendency series.
Harbinger has been described as ‘gripping’, ‘great’ and ‘incredible’ as well as that ‘it picks up and builds brilliantly where Threshold left off’.
