Pressbox (Press Release) - A love of Ireland was the inspiration for retired West Sussex businesswoman to write and publish her debut novel.
Jan More’s gripping romantic thriller, When the Lights Turn to Green, has already attracted a growing string of five-star reviews from readers.
Critics have described the 73-year-old’s book as being ‘hooked from the start’, ‘very enjoyable’, and ‘couldn’t put it down’.
Reviewer Nick Owen stated: “I hope there will be a sequel.”
Jan, whose favourite authors include Philip Gregory, Thomas Hardy and Barbara Erskine, has always found writing a therapeutic hobby.
But it was her extensive research into her Irish ancestry that led her to southern Ireland, and an immediate sense of homecoming, leading her to the desire to tackling her first full-length novel.
Jan said: “When the Lights Turn to Green takes place mainly in Ireland, along the south coast, where there are many quiet areas and coves ideal for smuggling.
“The idea for writing the book was that it would be a joy to write, as all of the locations are very dear to my heart.
“Through my own love of history and my Irish ancestors, I have researched the area pretty well.
“All of the places in the story are real whilst the story, characters and events are all down to my imagination.”
When the Lights Turn to Green follows the fortunes of Francis Doyle who retreats to Ireland in search of a much-needed break from her busy London life.
While romance quickly takes centre stage with the meeting of undercover police officer, Michael Conner, their relationship is put at risk by smuggling gangs from Eastern Europe.
Jan’s vivid imagery, compelling characterisation and natural ability for story-telling makes When the Lights Turn to Green a thrilling and enjoyable novel.
She added: “As I wrote chapter by chapter my good friend became interested to read the emerging manuscript.
“She provided the encouragement to continue, saying, it was a page turner.
“My husband too was extremely positive, though I thought he might be biased.”
Prior to her retirement Jan co-ran two businesses and also spent lengthy periods of time at sea with her Merchant navy officer husband.
Despite the glowing reviews since the release of When the Lights Turn to Green, she remains undecided whether to write and release a sequel.
