Pressbox (Press Release) - Since Steven Garvey first climbed into the cab at the tender age of 21 his life as an HGV driver has been one long adventure.
Now the 70-year-old grandfather from North Wales is retelling the ups and downs of life on the road in his five-star-rated autobiography, The Road, To Ruin, And Back.
The deeply honest account of the haulage industry through the decades has been met with critical acclaim from reviewers.
The Road, To Ruin, And Back has been described by readers as ‘captivating’, ‘heart-warming’ and ‘a little gem’.
Critic Susan Worley stated: “Brilliant insight into the life of an HGV driver.”
While most of the stories within Steven’s book relate to his time behind the wheel, he also reflects on his family life and the challenges they have faced – including a move from his childhood home of Manchester to rebuild in Wales.
He explained: “The Road, to Ruin, and Back is a collection of stories amassed in my life, mainly concerning life on the road as a lorry driver in the UK.”
“There are tales of kindness, rudeness, humour and sadness.”
“It also tells of how my wife and I rebuilt our lives following two attempts at running our own businesses which, for several reasons, failed.”
Following in the footsteps of his father and his childhood being, what he describes as, a transport apprenticeship, Steven joined the haulage industry straight from school in the late 1960s.
The Road, to Ruin, and Back quickly hits the fast lane as he highlights the ever-changing landscape of Britain’s roads system – and the ever tightening of HGV regulations.
While Steven’s autobiography will appeal to anyone with an interest in transport, it is the personal insights into his own trials and tribulations that lift the book above similar titles.
Steven, whose favourite authors include Charles Dickens, Wilbur Smith and Anna Sewell, added: “I had a passion for lorries from a young age and this manifested into me trying to reach my goal of having and running my own vehicle.”
“Along the way I was side-tracked from this path and my life changed dramatically, resulting in me drifting for a while into a life I had not envisaged.”
“My wife, Pat, and I are ordinary working class people, and the book tells of our fightback from having to give up our home in Manchester and rebuilding our lives in North Wales.”
“It is a truthful story of my life.”

The Road, to Ruin, and Back is attracting a lengthy string of five-star reviews and Steven has been inspired by that, he is at present finishing off a children's bed time picture story book and has plans to write another book based around the life of a long distance truck driver.
