Berkshire gran’s book based on years of sexual abuse

Pressbox (Press Release) - Jean Shorney was always destined to become a successful novelist.
The only surprise is that it took almost seven decades for the grandmother from Berkshire to live up to her early promise.
Jean wrote her first novel at the age of just eight and her stories were the regular focus of attention for her teachers.s
Now with a string of five-star-rated novels behind her, the 73-year-old widow has told her most personal and courageous story – based on her own ordeals of sexual abuse and becoming a mother outside wedlock.
Dangerous Lovers: A Memoir has been described by critics as ‘a real eye opener’, ‘brilliant’, and ‘an exciting crime thriller’.
Although written as a novel, Jean’s latest offering follows her own experiences as a single mother attempting to make her way in the male-dominant workplace of the 1970s.
She explained: “Working as a female butcher in a supermarket, sexual abuse in the workplace was rife.
“My boss sexually abused me for almost four years, and there was no chance of reporting him if I wanted to keep my job.
“I was already coping as an unmarried mother in the days when out of wedlock pregnancies were frowned on.”
While many names and places have been changed to protect characters still alive, Dangerous Lovers; A Memoir is an honest account of Jean’s struggles and dangerous liaisons.
Refusing to hand over her baby after he was born and rebelling against her own religious mother’s strict upbringing, Jean walked into the arms of a young criminal.
Rejecting offers of money for her baby from a childless couple, and dodging the advances of her middle-aged boss, Dangerous Lovers: A Memoir follows Jean as she falls for a Hungarian boy who is just out of borstal.
Jean’s moving memoirs not only provide a sobering reminder of an almost forgotten era, but they also provide for a thrilling novel.
As well as rave reviews from critics, Dangerous Lovers: A Memoir was eventually given the thumbs-up from her writer son.
Jean explained: “My son has always been critical of my work - he never gives compliments lightly.
“I had written at least five drafts of Dangerous Lovers: A Memoir before he was remotely satisfied
“I had never written a memoir before and, a writer himself, he helped me to craft the story.
“After four years my efforts have finally met with his approval.”
