Pressbox (Press Release) - Retired teacher Roger Bunyan is celebrating half a century of hitting the heights with the publication of extracts from his mountain diaries.
The 70-year-old, who lives in the shadow of the western Pennines, has just released Mountain Magic: Diary Extracts of a Mountain Fanatic to critical acclaim.
Roger’s enjoyable anecdotes have been described by reviewers as ‘very clever’, ‘funny’, and ‘a thoroughly good read’.
From the gentle slopes near his Lancashire home to the challenging ascents on some of Europe and Africa’s highest peaks, Mountain Magic: Diary Extracts of a Mountain Fanatic is a thrilling and, at times, humorous journey.
And his literal footsteps are all the more remarkable, as Roger underwent heart surgery before he’d even reached halfway along his half-century in the hills.
Roger said: “Mountain Magic is a book about 50 years of ‘doing things’ in the mountains.
“There are selected stories, some funny, some more serious about various activities I’ve taken part in.
“As I say in my introduction of the book, they are just the selected tales of an average ability mountain person as he’s travelled through half a century in the hills.
“It is also a celebration of living after having a new heart valve in 1987 – and a ‘thank you’ to medical teams who keep many of us alive so we might enjoy many more years.”
Inspired by adventurers and explorers such as John Muir, Nobert Casteret, Matthew Henson and Fridtjof Nansen, Roger has never shied away from a challenge.
To keep many of his heroes from being forgotten, he also regularly contributes articles to outdoor magazines about the men and women who forged new paths around the world.
The father-of-one explained: “When I learnt of certain adventurers who achieved such incredible feats had almost been forgotten I thought I could help retell their stories and try to keep their memories and achievements alive.
“So, these adventurers became my inspiration really.
“Since retirement I’ve been fortunate to write about their historical adventurers for an outdoor magazine.
“A personal hero of mine is Norway’s Fridtjof Nansen who explored the Arctic and overwintered in a hovel on a remote island.
“Later in his life he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.”
During a distinguished career in the classroom, Roger taught generations of primary school pupils in England as well as students at secondary schools in Tanzania and Kiribati.
