Pressbox (Press Release) - Former restaurant owner and estate agent Audrey Stephenson-Taylor has finally published her debut novel – almost 60 years after winning a Swiss holiday through her writing.
The 70-year-old from West London had already attracted the attention of literary agents with her previous work.
But it has taken retirement for Audrey – who writes under the name J Taylor – to finally go to print.
Her debut novel, Right Time Wrong Place, has already earned a string of five-star reviews from captivated readers.
They describe the fast-paced, yet light-hearted, thriller as being ‘most enjoyable’, ‘a good read’ and ‘hilarious’.
Audrey, who lives in Ruislip, admits it was third time lucky with her books.
She said: “At the age of 12 I won a holiday to Switzerland in a writing competition and that really set me off
“I wrote a novel in 1993 – chic lit and sent it to literary agents, Darley Anderson.
“Darley Anderson himself expressed interest and invited me to his office in Fulham to discuss it.
“Unfortunately, life, children and holidays got in the way and I didn’t take it any further.
“I have also written a non-fiction book in 2012 – Diet Rehab – I prefer to think it was ahead of its time as no agents showed interest.
“Both books languish on my computer.”
Right Time Wrong Place follows the fortunes of a middle-aged, mother-of-two who accidentally becomes involved in the kidnapping of a teenage boy.
With his wealthy family failing to report him missing, Susie takes it upon herself to track down the teenager.
With masterful characterisation, unpredictable twists and an enjoyable sprinkling of humour, Right Time Wrong Place, is one of this year’s must-read novels.
Audrey, whose favourite authors include Peter James, Adele Parks and Simon Kernick, admits her main character has convinced her to start work on a sequel.
She added: “Right Time Wrong Place was not planned as a series initially but I’ve grown to love my lead character, Susie, and I think there could be a mini-series.
“I’m currently working on the follow-up book with Susie as my protagonist, as she continues to bungle and flounder delightfully yet bravely to a gratifying outcome.”
During a varied working life, Audrey owned and managed a restaurant in Majorca, was employed by the NHS in human resources, and sold multi-million properties during her time as an estate agent in Notting Hill.
