Aberdeenshire writer’s rabbit tales are hit with readers

Added: (Tue Jan 17 2023)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A retired teacher from Aberdeenshire is spearheading a French language revival with the help of her toy rabbit.
Rhona Mair began creating stories with simple French words to supplement her granddaughter’s school lessons.
And following encouragement from fellow members of her reading club she began crafting the stories into a series of rhyming books.
Rhona, who is inspired by authors such as Noel Barber, Jeffrey Archer and Ann Cleeves, has just released the first three Monsieur Lapin stories – reaching the top three in Amazon’s charts and also attracting a string of five-star reviews.
Rhona, who writes under her maiden name of McMillan, said: “Prior to the outbreak of coronavirus, my granddaughter had begun learning French at school.
“I had the idea of introducing simple French words and sayings to her via an amusing story.
“With the advent of Covid, children’s education suffered terribly.
“My granddaughter’s French lessons ceased.
“Nevertheless, I kept writing during lockdown and Monsieur Lapin’s adventures continued.
“Several adults as well as my grandchildren have been introduced to Monsieur Lapin - their responses have been very encouraging.”
Rhona’s quirky and entertaining stories all feature the toy rabbit Monsieur Lapin, who miraculously comes alive whenever he hears French words.
The first three books – Monsieur Lapin in Hospital, Monsieur Lapin Plays Hide and Seek, and Monsieur Lapin Goes to London – have been released to critical acclaim.
The books have been described as ‘lovely’, ‘well-presented’ and ‘highly recommended’.
Rhona added: “These tales will delight the young reader and give them an understanding of simple, everyday French vocabulary.
“Each story introduces new French words and phrases together with their English translations.
“In this way, the reader begins to learn a new language in an easy and entertaining fashion.”
Rhona is currently working on further Monsieur Lapin adventure stories.
Based in rural Aberdeenshire, Rhona enjoys the company of wild rabbits and garden birds while constructing her educational adventure tales.
Away from the written word, she has also enjoyed a spell as a theatre producer.
