Devon carer’s practical guidebook achieves success

Pressbox (Press Release) - They are regularly overworked and almost always underpaid, but now, at least, some help is at hand for the country’s care workers.
Alisia Mae Jennings the original City girl born in Bristol moved to Devon at the age of Sixteen. Now she lives in the South Devon town of Kingsbridge where she spent more than 15 years working in the care sector.
And now the 42-year-old ex-Cllr and Mayor’s wife has produced the guide she wishes had been available when she began her career.
Since its recent publication, Secrets of the Care Sector has already reached number two in Amazon’s social sciences chart.
Alisia said: “Secrets of the Care Sector is the book I wish I had when I started working in the sector.
“It is the book that tells the truth about how the industry currently provides care.
“It outlines the training provided to care workers and prompts the carer to think of their own needs while caring for others.
“The main aim is to provide a practical guide, but with a twist of humour.
“Family members of the service user will gain a better understanding of how the system works, and agency or care home managers will benefit from frontline information.”
Alisia took up writing in her 20s as antidote for the stress and anxiety that life brings.
Inspired by authors such as Eric Berne, Joshua Fletcher, and Dean Stott, she reacted to news reports last year of added pressures on the shoulders of carers during lockdown by planning her guide.
Alisia, who is also a qualified paralegal, spent the next six months researching and writing Secrets of the Care Sector.
She added: “The idea for Secrets of the Care Sector came to me back in June 2021 when the media focus was all on care workers.
“The care industry needs informed care workers, and the care sector needs a care plan of its own to ensure the next generation has the support they need when they become a service user.
“The message I wanted to convey from Secrets of the Care Sector is that you can’t look after others until you learn to look after yourself.”
Secrets of the Care Sector is broken down into handy sections which cover everything from training and lone working to relationships with the health profession and the business side of the sector.
Alisia’s handy guide also weighs up the care home versus homecare dilemma, probes the problems with pay and unfair rotas, and provides plenty of hints and tips on how to get ahead as a carer.
Following the successful launch of her first book, Alisia is now planning a follow up book to expose the secrets surrounding the first aid sector.
