World Countries expected to sign Global Compact for Safe Orderly and Regular Migration

Almost all countries of the world, barring a few are expected to come together in Morocco on the 10th and 11th of December, under the auspices of the United Nations to sign and pledge their support for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular migration. It is the first of its kind agreement on the global phenomena of international migration, and is expected to bring in major changes to the immigration policies of many countries once it comes into effect. It aims to address the challenges facing international migration in all its aspects. Though it is not binding legally, yet it is largely likely to be honored as it is based on values of, non-discrimination, state sovereignty, responsibility-sharing and human rights. The Global compact is expected to explore the immigration problem from all angles and exhort a cooperative approach towards addressing immigration problems as well as harnessing its benefits.
Objectives of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration
The global compact aims at fulfilling 23 objectives which will serve to manage migration in a better manner at both regional, national and international levels. The most salient objectives of the compact are as follows.
1. It aims to reduce the adverse conditions and structural weakness that stop people from living with sustainable economic, social and political comfort in their home countries.
2. It aims to drastically reduce the risks faced by international refugees and immigrants at different stages of the migration process by treating them with respect and protecting their human rights and also providing them with the required care and assistance as and when needed.
3. It aims to understand and address the legitimate concerns of countries with respect to immigration and the changes it brings to the economic, social demographic, and environmental structure
4. It aims to create the right conditions to enable immigrants to make a positive and meaningful contribution to societies
The Global Compact if and when it comes into effect, would definitely mark an epoch in the way immigration is handled around the world
