Kent chef’s book inspired by mother’s tragic death

Added: (Tue Jan 04 2022)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Award-winning catering chef Jane Bevan admits she owes all her culinary success to the mother she lost as a child.
And to mark the 40th anniversary of her passing, the 56-year-old from Kent has published a book of the recipes they made together in the family kitchen.
Cherry Bakewell: Stories from My Kitchen is a charming activity book for children, packed with stories, games and mouth-watering recipes.
Jane explained: “I was inspired by my mum.
“She died of cancer when I was 15 and she was the one who taught me to cook from an early age.
“I’ve now been running my own catering business for well over 20 years, thanks to her knowledge.
“I now want to pass on this knowledge to other children.
“December, 2019 marked 40 years since she died and I thought it would be a nice tribute to her to write a book based on some of my memories of our time together.”
The colourful story-come-cookbook has already been awarded a string of five-star reviews from thrilled readers.
Critics have described Jane’s stories and recipes as ‘a really lovely book’, ‘a fantastic concept’, and ‘fun for all the family’.
Reviewer Valerie Taylor said: “Cherry Bakewell; Stories from My Kitchen is a great book for children.
“Not only is it a really sweet story it has some great recipes for the children to make - I loved it.”
Mum-of-two Jane, who lists the likes of Charles Dickens, JK Rowling and Roald Dahl among her favourite authors, has accompanied her mother’s delicious recipes with a sprinkling of delightful short stories.
And within the covers of Cherry Bakewell: Stories from My Kitchen is also a platter of additional kitchen-themed activities and games.
Jane, who lives in the village of Eythorne near Dover, added: “Cherry Bakewell - Stories from My Kitchen features seven short stories based on the memories I had with my mum.
“At the end of each chapter there is a recipe relating to the story.
“Some of the ingredients are printed in red – and the children have to collect these red ingredients and try to guess the final secret recipe which is printed at the end of the book.
“Cherry Bakewell is based on my mum and the children are loosely based on me and my brother.”
On the back of Cherry Bakewell: Stories from My Kitchen Jane has created an online cookery club for children.
She also continues to organise fundraising events for Cancer Research UK – with a percentage of the proceeds from her new book also supporting the charity.
Following the success of Cherry Bakewell: Stories from My Kitchen, Jane has started working on a second collection of stories and recipes.
