From Liverpool to Leningrad in exciting new book

Added: (Thu Dec 23 2021)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Established Liverpool author Derek Mellor admits he’s taking a gamble with the third part of his exciting series of historic novels after his proof-readers both came down with Covid.
The former social worker has built up a loyal fanbase with his previous two gripping thrillers, The Lucy Effect and The Starling’s Magic.
But while writing both books, he had some expert eyes offering feedback and providing corrections along the way.
Derek’s latest offering, Habana Secrets, takes his epic story from Liverpool and Leningrad to the tough streets of late 1950s Cuba.
He said: “Normally I would have had feedback long before publishing but my main proof-readers have been affected by the Covid virus.
“My wife Linda read it, but she’s a little biased – although she did say she couldn’t put it down at times.”
Habana Secrets follows the fortunes of retired cop Hahyoo as he stumbles into the middle of a murderous kidnapping in Havana.
As with his previous novels, Derek perfectly captures a country in the midst of turmoil and change.
And he yet again weaves into his historic settings, an intricate and highly believable plot packed with explosive action, edge-of-the-seat suspense, and even a sprinkling of comedy.
Several of the characters from his previous novels also make an appearance in Habana Secrets.
Derek added: “Habana Secrets is thriller set in a colourful country, where the mambo and living for the moment dominates.
“A gang commits a vicious murder coupled with the kidnapping of children.
“The police aren’t involved in finding the culprits, as it’s not in their interests.
“It’s a race against time to find the children and get out of the country.
“But underneath lies a plethora of secrets which have a potential to upset their aims. “
Derek’s painstaking research has yet again paid off for his latest novel.
The 75-year-old grandfather earned high praise for the authentic portrayal of 1915 Liverpool in The Lucy Effect, as well as late 1920s Leningrad in The Starling’s Magic.
Habana Secrets paints a vivid picture of lawless northern Cuba in the months leading up to Fidel Castro’s armed uprising of 1958/59 to topple dictator Fulgencio Batista.
Derek is currently working on a fourth book in the series – this time with his recovered proof-readers providing input.
