Midlands writer inspired by dreams to write book

Added: (Fri Dec 17 2021)

Pressbox (Press Release) - New Midlands author Paul Eglinton is proud to be a dreamer.
The 26-year-old writer has just published the opening instalment of his planned edge-of-the-seat fantasy series.
And he is quick to admit that the storyline for The World Spire came to him in a stream of dreams spread over almost twelve months.
Paul, who works in retail by day, explained: “I was inspired to start writing by a series of shadow dreams that I experienced over the span of about a year.
“I then spent another year researching Jungian psychology and comparing my experiences with depictions of shadows in other texts and media, until I could answer the questions that my dreams had posed me.”
The World Spire follows the fortunes of Arlo as he is forced to flee his home and survive the perilous streets of Seren.
Arlo chooses to complete jobs for the Order – a secretive organisation devoted to the infamous god, Seth, during which he must avoid the watchful eye of the city’s ruling goddess, Aurelia.
“The city of Seren, where the novel is based, was inspired by the claustrophobic, labyrinthine streets that characterised London around the time of the industrial revolution.”
The World Spire has all the hallmarks of classic Pratchett or Gaiman with its unexpected twists and outlandish characters.
But, as Paul points out, his latest book also delves into complex themes within the rollercoaster narrative.
“The World Spire explores individuation, the conflicts of a magical society and how people confront difficult choices.
He added: “Arlo must see Seth’s plan to take over the city through to completion, and in return his father will be cured of the life-threatening sickness that afflicts him.
“His tasks will pit him against the city, his friends and Aurelia.
“As the power struggle between gods threatens to break into all-out war, Arlo must succeed or lose everything.”
Paul, inspired by the Red vs Blue: Reconstruction web series, first began constructing characters and stories during his early teens.
The university graduate has based many of the themes which run through the first instalment of his series on attitudes and customs associated with Georgian England, viewed through a lens of magic and mystery.
Paul is currently working on the second book in the series.
