Retired Bath boss thrills readers with hit novel

Added: (Thu Dec 09 2021)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Retired Bath businessman John Parker admits it has taken him four decades to finally publish his explosive Bill Gates-inspired debut novel.
The former care-home owner has just released the five-star-rated Corrupted by Power to critical acclaim.
Not only has the frighteningly prophetic thriller won over the reviewers but it has also reached Amazon’s top ten.
But quality of the highly accomplished page-turner is understandable, considering John has been working on books on and off for over 40 years.
The 72-year-old, who was runner-up in a national writing competition as a teenager, said: “Coming second in the competition inspired me to write more.
“Besides Corrupted by Power, which took a year to write, I have written a trilogy of spiritual, self-help books collectively titled - Taking Stock of your Life.
“I have been writing this series of books on life, society, philosophy, coping and religion for over 40 years now but, believe it or not, I have only just finished them.
“I only ever added to them when I thought that I had something important to say and that’s usually following a major life event of my own.”
Corrupted by Power, which is inspired by Bill Gates’ 1996 book The Road Ahead, is set 20 to 30 years in the future.
With a rich intricate plot and strong, forceful characters, this fictional but stunningly credible story weaves a menacing web of intrigue around seven of the world's most powerful and secretive men.
By abducting a baby boy, they tailor his education and environment to eventually have the perfect candidate for becoming British Prime Minister.
They construct his image, elevate his profile, and nurture his popularity until he becomes the man the country turns to in a moment of national need.
And they achieve this not by using the existing political process but through the Internet – using their online presence in ordinary people’s lives.
John added: “In predicting the explosion of the Internet, Bill Gates argued that it would have unprecedented, but equally unforeseen consequences for society at large.
“He contended that ‘the mind cannot conceive what other changes will follow - but they will be explosive, dramatic and far ranging’, leading to a new social order.
“Corrupted by Power postulates such a social change, but even Gates might have balked at the extraordinary suggestion that the internet could lead to the entire undermining of the democratic process itself.

“Throughout most of Corrupted by Power, Mark Steer, the central character, is totally unaware of their objective and we watch in despair as he tries to make sense of events and struggles with his inner turmoil amidst the ever changing and increasing demands of his uncles.
“The book provides a thought provoking look at the current democratic process in Great Britain and sets out an alternative society based partly on modern internet voting systems.”
Since the release of Corrupted by Power, it has been described by critics as ‘thought-provoking’, ‘well written and fast paced’ and ‘gripping’.
John is currently working on his second novel, The Day Father Christmas Died.
