Kent writer’s lesson in how to please readers with thriller

Pressbox (Press Release) - One of the country’s most prolific thriller writers has delved into his 40-year-career in crime psychology, as well as his Irish roots, to produce his latest gripping novel.
The Pupil is yet another thrilling page-turner from the hand of Dr Billy Conn that will have readers guessing until the final pages.
Kent-based Dr Conn spent four decades working with the victims of serious sexual crimes – as well as their abusers.
And the internationally respected psychologist has used his vast experience to shift careers and start crafting gritty and highly anticipated storylines.
Dr Conn, who has released eight five-star novels since retiring from criminology five years’ ago, said: “The Pupil is about a music teacher living alone in a remote village, and a strange new pupil who pays in advance for exactly 21 lessons.
“The teacher finds himself increasingly preoccupied with the pupil – and uninvited things start happening.
“There’s the impression of music from the attic, and there’s also the coded diary slowly relinquishing its treacherous tale.
“Who is the beautiful and spirited Irish woman whose alluring wit and fondness for quoting W B Yeats’ poetry intoxicate him?
“Is she really the visiting freelance writer she claims to be?
“What is behind her interest in the cottage he rents?
“Why does she insist there is a cellar there when he has never seen one?
“What possible reason can there have been for the exorcism once performed in the cottage?”
The latest novel from the new master of suspense throws up more questions than answers before expertly being unravelled.
Since first producing his Sleepers of the Cave trilogy back in 2015 and ’16, which focussed on child sex abuse, Dr Conn has become one of the country’s most anticipated thriller writers.
His books regularly chart highly and attract five-star reviews.
And The Pupil won’t disappoint his growing fan base with more authentic characters, unexpected twists and plenty of unsavoury evil.
Billy added: “When a stranger in the local pub seems to recognize Adrian, the past becomes a predator.
“As tragedy looms, a voice from the saddest part of him asks ‘how is it that we best deceive ourselves when we are most certain that we do not?’”
Dr Conn was born, educated and trained as a psychologist in Ireland before moving to England to practice in the 1970s.
