- CMA greenlights merger between NortonLifeLock and Avast - TechInformed
- Following an “in-depth” merger investigation, the Competition and Markets Authority has cleared the proposed acquisition of Avast by NortonLifeLock.
The CMA had queried the merger in early August (Phase 2) suggesting that it is unlikely the deal would reduce competition and lift consumer costs, but it said a deeper dive into the potential agreement was needed.
Kirstin Baker, chair of the CMA inquiry group, said at the time: “… we are currently satisfied that this deal won’t worsen the options available to consumers. As such, we have provisionally concluded that the deal can go ahead.”
After a consultation that wrapped-up on 24 August, the authority has decided to uphold its provisional findings and approve the deal.
Its investigations found that the merging businesses won’t restrict competition, coming mainly from McAfee, their biggest rival, plus a range of other suppliers that currently have a smaller market position in the UK.
The CMA also noted tech giant Microfsoft’s added rivalry, with its evolving and built-in security applications offering important alternatives for consumers that are similar to those of Norton and Avast.
Baker concluded: “After reviewing the evidence in an in-depth review, we are now satisfied that this deal won’t worsen the options available to consumers. As such, we have concluded that the deal can go ahead.”

- What is Climbing Formwork?
- Climbing formwork is a special type of formwork for large vertical concrete structures. Climbing formworks represent an effective solution for structures that require seamless walls or have a very repetitive form.
There are several types of climbing formwork according to the type of building being built. They can move on their own, using hydraulic or electric jacks, commonly known as self-climbing formwork, or they can be relocated with cranes and other equipment.
The self-climbing formwork remains in place during the pouring process. Crane picked-up jump forms are typically used on buildings of five stories or more; fully self-climbing jump form systems are generally used on structures with more than 20-floor levels.
How Self-Climbing Formworks Are Assembled？
Normally, this type of formwork is constructed from steel members. Concrete form panels are attached to this frame; some of them are supported on rollers. After the concrete walls are poured, it is released and moved away from the wall. Then, if self-climbing formwork is being used, jacks lift the frame up to the next level or to the next area where it will be used. This is normally a relatively fast procedure.
Once the climbing formwork is in position, the panels are closed, and the next concrete wall is poured. The cycle continues, which is normally three to five days. Faster times can be achieved but you will need a really specialized and trained crew. However, the limiting factor to faster times is usually the construction of the floor slabs, which are poured as a separate process.
Self-Climbing Formworks Benefits
Self-Climbing formworks usually do not require a crane to move them, reducing your general condition cost.
Increased construction speed is obtained by allowing the vertical and horizontal parts of a building to be built concurrently.
It minimizes labor time and has a better productivity rate (these systems are designed for repetitive actions) and less labor is required to set up the forms.
Increased safety as the labor of setting and removing is less than traditional systems.
It does not need additional support to the formwork (it is supported by the walls just poured).
It can be used during almost all types of weather.
Normally, they provide an area for use as a scaffold.
High-quality surface finishes can be achieved.
Can sustain high winds (better productivity on windy days)
The formwork system is easy to clean and reuse with little waste generated compared to traditional systems.
Other protection systems (screens) can be hung off a big jump form and climbed with the system.
Some of these systems can be installed in such a way that even a concrete pump can also be used within the same area and space.
Long lengths can be obtained by combining different sections for each particular project.
Some formwork systems can be used at an inclined angle.
Once the learning curve has passed, performance will be optimized and work will be completed faster.
These systems will minimize the usage of scaffolding and temp work platforms.

- Britain’s Equality watchdog to regulate public bodies’ use of AI - TechInformed
- The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is set to become the new regulator of the use of artificial intelligence by UK public bodies.
The regulator intends to clamp down on the discrimination technology can issue, with evidence showing that bias built in algorithms can lead to “less favorable” treatment of people depending on characteristics such as race and sex.
“While technology is often a force for good, there is evidence that some innovation, such as the use of artificial intelligence, can perpetuate bias and discrimination if poorly implemented.
“Many organisations may not know they could be breaking equality law, and people may not know how AI is used to make decisions about them,” said Marcial Boo, chief executive of the EHRC.
In July this year, the UK outlined new AI regulation which aimed to boost innovation and public trust in technology. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) had already expressed concerns over the use of algorithms to filter recruitment applications.
In its new three-year strategy, EHRC has made evident that tackling discrimination in AI is a key focus, and has today published new guidelines to help organisations steer-clear from breaches of equality law, including the public sector equality duty (PSED).
“As part of this, we are monitoring how public bodies use technology to make sure they are meeting their legal responsibilities, in line with our guidance published today. The EHRC is committed to working with partners across sectors to make sure technology benefits everyone, regardless of their background,” Boo stresses.
Starting in October, the commission will work with roughly 30 local authorities to gain insight into how they are using AI to deliver essential services, such as benefits payments, amid concerns that automated systems are inappropriately flagging certain families as a fraud risk.
The government body is also exploring how best to use its authority to examine how organisations are using facial recognition technology, following worries that the software may be disproportionately affecting people from ethnic minorities.
“It’s vital for organisations to understand these potential biases and to address any equality and human rights impacts,” concludes Boo.
