Craig Randall suffered the loss of several family members and friends before turning his grief into the inspiration for writing You Are Awesome.
He also worked out self-help methods to overcome other personal obstacles and fears.
But it was an unexpected gift from his wife that led to the 30-year-old realising what could be done with words.
Craig explained: “I only really started to get into reading books at the end of 2018 when my wife bought me the entire set of Harry Potter.
“Safe to say J K Rowling set the bar very high with her amazingly creative imagination.
“You Are Awesome is really about my journey so far and some of the hurdles I have had to face and the way I have dealt with them.
“It’s not your normal self-help book, but there are some fun challenges inside to hopefully inject some enjoyment.”
Since the release of You Are Awesome, it has reached the top five in Amazon’s self-help charts.
Craig’s autobiographical approach to delivering a series of helpful hints and tips for improving well-being and mental health has also led to a string of five-star reviews.
Although the father-of-one did some background research ahead of writing You Are Awesome, he admits most of his ideas are original.
Craig, who regularly raised at 4am to write his first book before heading for work, added: “Most of You Are Awesome was either in my head or in my heart.
“For some reason I have become so passionate about wanting to help others that I couldn’t stop writing and wanted to prove I could make a difference.”
You Are Awesome has been described as ‘a good positive read’, ‘thought-provoking’ and ‘awesome’ by captivated reviewers.

- Limerick City Retailer Launches Online To Offset High Street Shutdown
- A Limerick city centre retailer that closed its doors in March due to the COVID-19 restrictions has commenced trading once again following the launch of its new website.
Nevil’s Shoes of O’Connell Street, a leading men’s and women's designer shoe shop, is reporting “strong sales” since nevilsshoes.ie went live last week.
“While we had planned to establish an eCommerce site before this public health emergency, there is no doubt the move online was prompted by the reality that we may not be able to open our doors until later in the year,” explained Chris O'Sullivan, proprietor of Nevil's Shoes.
She continued, “Though we know fashion retail outlets such as ours may now reopen during June under the Government’s Roadmap, we felt that we needed to innovate if we were to survive.”
“In April, we contacted Magico to work with us as we had little eCommerce knowledge,” added Ms. O’Sullivan. “In just over one month, we have successfully catalogued hundreds of products and in effect, have introduced what our shop has to offer to an online setting. It truly is a game changer for us, and it is especially heartening to see so many of our longstanding customers returning to our shop, even if it is online.”
“Our priority all along has been to prepare for the reopening our doors on O’Connell Street but we are very much aware that we are going to living with COVID-19 for a very long time. We may not have considered launching an online store in the past, but with consumer behaviour changing it is now hard to see how we will continue to trade without an online offering in the years ahead,” stated Ms. O’Sullivan.
Paul Montwill of Magico, which has developed online stores for hundreds of Irish businesses, said, “Nevil’s Shoes, like other retailers across Ireland, were suddenly forced to close their doors in March. Chris contacted Magico in early April and worked with us every step of the way from website design and cataloguing right through to her first sale last week.”
Mr. Montwill said that while traditional high-street retail activity will experience a significant downturn in 2020, online sales in Ireland will surpass all previous records this year as lockdown-affected businesses and consumers look online to sell and buy products.

- A store boss from the Highlands is hoping Quentin Tarantino will stumble across his new action-packed debut novel.
Steven Cormack admits the inspiration for writing his five-star crime comedy came from watching Reservoir Dogs and other Tarantino classics.

- Retired psychologist’s new book praises women
- A retired psychologist from Kent is honouring the determined and talented women he worked with by creating his very own magnificent seven.
Dr Billy Conn spent more than 40 years observing how many of his clients and associates had strengths as well as peccadillos more fascinating than readily accounted for by the theories of his profession.

In The Murder Club, he merges aspects of his previous working life and writing to date, bringing together many of the women he encountered. Dr Conn explained: “The character of Kaleisha Powell is loosely based on a young psychologist who, many years ago, was under my supervision.
“I hijacked a real police investigation of a murder in a rural community which had very much intrigued me to become one of the reasons Kaleisha was inspired to join the police.
“The seven members who make up the Murder Club are very individualistic women who readily close ranks to support and protect one another.
“While not based directly on individuals these women are an amalgam of the many strong and intelligent women I have met and worked with.”
Dr Conn was born, educated and trained as a psychologist in Ireland before moving to England to practise.
His decades of working as a psychologist inevitably influenced many of his remarkable previous books.
As with his earlier novels, which all earned five-star reviews, in The Murder Club nothing is ever quite what it seems.
Dr Conn added: “The Murder Club emerged from a discussion with friends, one of whom was trying to get her husband to stop talking while she said something.
“She memorably said, ‘honestly, I sometimes think I should superglue his mouth shut’.
“This led to a discussion of bizarre means of committing murder and of crime fiction.
“Though I had read most of the classic crime fiction writers, researching this book brought me the pleasure of revisiting them and of digging deeper into the biographies of their creators.
“The story that emerged is of a crime fiction-obsessed detective with ambitions to write.
“In her investigation into a sudden death she had not expected to confront the combined forces of seven fictional detectives as suspects.
“This inspired her to start her own first story in which a girl and her dog simply disappear without trace in a small village – thus two interconnected stories emerge.”

- Max's Helping Paws Expands Access to Financial Assistance
- During these extraordinary times, Max’s Helping Paws Foundation has continued its mission to help fund treatment for pets in crisis, saying yes to nearly 250 pets through 23 veterinary partner practices.
Carmel, CA, May 15, 2020 - Historically, treatment had to be through one of these partner practices. Increased needs surrounding the COVID-19 , pandemic has led the nonprofit to announce that effective Friday, May 15, 2020, pet owners will be able to apply indefinitely for Max's financial assistance programs through any Monterey County veterinary practice that would like to sponsor a client.
“Organizations, both for-profit and nonprofit, must pivot to the needs of this county as best they can right now,” said Dyana Klein, who founded Max’s Helping Paws in 2016, following the death of her Miniature Pinscher Max. “Our first initiative was the launch of Chestnut's Crisis Fund, specifically designed to help pet owners financially impacted by the pandemic.”
Knowing that the ripple effects from the pandemic will be felt for a long time, the nonprofit needed to evolve to an open model based on “inclusivity, accessibility and reciprocity.”
“We know that the need for financial assistance to help keep companion pets from suffering has multiplied,” said Klein. “We have to be where the needs are, and we can't achieve that if we restrict support to a subset of local practices.”
With this new model, pet families, already in difficult situations, will not be asked to go somewhere new in order to apply for support. Eligibility and process, consisting of a client application and treating veterinary practice form, will remain unchanged. No enrollment form or contract of any kind will be required in order for a treating veterinary practice to sponsor a client.
Max’s will also unveil a simple virtual training page for new veterinary practices. “We hope to build a reciprocal support model so we can continue to help more pets at more practices,” Klein said. Max’s will highlight and feature year-round those practices that are able to reciprocate through participation in fundraising activities.
Believing financial circumstances should never decide a companion pet’s fate, Max’s relies on the generosity of the community to fund its mission. General donations are accepted through the nonprofit’s website www.maxshelpingpaws.org.

Salinas, CA, May 14, 2020 - In light of the current crisis surrounding COVID-19, and in the interest of public health and safety, the Artichoke Festival has cancelled its annual summer celebration, scheduled for Aug. 8-9, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center in Monterey.
Held continuously since 1959, the festival has made this difficult decision following recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with local health agencies.
“It was decided due to the uncertainty of the times and our concerns for the health of our attendees,” said Linda Scherer, executive director. “We are excited to announce June 5-6 as the dates for 2021.”
The Artichoke Festival will refund all pre-purchased tickets by patrons for the 2020 event.
The festival celebrates the harvest of California’s state vegetable and the region that has become known as the “Artichoke Center of the World.” Over the years, it has become a primary source of funding for local nonprofits that depend upon a successful event for their viability.
To continue helping these important nonprofits, the festival has added Donate Now buttons to its website at (www.artichokefestival.org), with 100 percent of all donations given to the following charity partners: Food Bank for Monterey County; Manzanita Youth Playground; Monterey County PAL; Meals on Wheels — Salinas; Monterey County Agricultural Education, Inc.
