- A Welsh medical secretary has showed that persistence pays off with the publication of his first full-length novel.
Keiron Austwick has just released his riveting debut, The Winds of Change, to critical acclaim.
But the 33-year-old from Cwmbran admits finally finishing one of his many stories has been an achievement in itself.
Keiron explained: “Finishing the book in an achievement for me as I have started writing stories but never got to finish them.
“I started writing in my mid-twenties and have never stopped.
“It’s hard finding time to write with a nine to five job but I managed to keep myself motivated until finishing The Winds of Change.”
The Winds of Change is well-observed study written in epistolary form of a 30-something year old man with Asperger’s Syndrome.
While daily challenges are difficult enough for character Rhys, Keiron’s novel demonstrates the turmoil that changes can cause.
But the skilfully told story, which is set in Cardiff, Singapore and New Zealand, shows how struggles and uncertainty can often prove beneficial.
While not entirely biographical, The Winds of Change has been inspired by many events in Keiron’s own life.
He said: “Rhys is the main character of the book and his story is told through his diary extracts.
“He is in his mid-thirties, works in a private hospital before gaining an apprenticeship and is the one that goes through all the changes as detailed in the book.”
“I had to do quite a lot of research into Asperger’s Syndrome in more detail and it surprised me to find that people who have it like Gary Numan, Susan Boyle or Guy Martin couldn’t be any more different to each other in terms of background and their lifestyles.”
“Some of what happens to Rhys is very loosely based on myself, and some parts of the story are based on imagination.”
Keiron, who cites CS Lewis and Jeffrey Archer among his influences, writes most evenings after coming home from work with NHS Wales.
The Winds of Change has been left open for a sequel, but Keiron hasn’t yet made any commitments to taking Rhys’s story any further forward.
“As much I am open to the possibility of a sequel for Rhys, I am focussing on other projects of writing which are very different to The Winds of Change.”

Stella said: “Parts of Rock ‘n Roll Mayhem 1970 are based on real events and music icons I met – with special love to Jimi Hendrix who died on September 18, 1970.
“I was arranging a Hippie Love Gathering in Hyde Park to celebrate his 50th anniversary.
“I didn’t need much research to write the book since I was there taking part in the happenings.
“My early career was in the music biz when I worked as personal assistant for the Rolling Stones and other music icons from 1970 to 1976.
“There were so many parties and receptions back then, one night I was hanging out with the Beatles, the next Aretha Franklin or the next, Alice Cooper… wild times.”
Stella was told it was unlikely she would live out the year after being diagnosed melanoma cancer back in 2017.
She’s not only survived, but has also completed two books, continues to hold sensual teaching workshops around the world, and at the end of 2020 will be in an African village to oversee drinking-water tanks being installed by a charity she supports.
Sharing her love of the flower power era with Rock ‘n Roll Mayhem 1970 was one of the drivers which helped in Stella’s recovery.
While all of her characters are fictitious, she admits several well-known names from the rock era did carry some influence.
Stella, who lives in Hertford, added: “Monster is possibly my favourite character.
“He wasn’t based on Ozzy Osborne from Black Sabbath but I had the fortune to join Ozzy’s European tour in 1971.
“There was something about Ozzy that touched my heart and came out in Monster’s personality.”

- Monterey Symphony Postpones 75th Anniversary Season, Announces Artistic Content Plans
- The Monterey Symphony announced its plans to postpone the 75th Anniversary Season which was slated to open at Sunset Center in October of 2020.
Carmel/Monterey, CA, July 07, 2020 – The Monterey Symphony announced its plans to postpone the 75th Anniversary Season which was slated to open at Sunset Center in October of 2020. This upcoming season focused on selecting the next Music Director of the Monterey Symphony, along with concerts in celebration of the orchestra’s 75 years.
Four finalists were announced in September of 2019: Donato Cabrera, Jung-Ho Pak, Jayce Ogren, and Peter Bay. Bios and information can be found about all four on the Symphony’s website. The Symphony remains committed to the search and intends to proceed in October of 2021. Also on the program, a new work by John Wineglass in honor of the historic Anniversary, featuring violinist Edwin Huizinga; a collaboration with Antioch Chamber Ensemble and the Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus; and a concert featuring the cinematic works of Mark Mancina.
With live performances falling into Phase 4 of the reopening and the current resurgence of cases and the current closure of Sunset Center, postponing the season was a unanimous decision by the board. Programming for the next twelve months includes releasing of archival recordings, musical postcards from the Symphony’s principal players and Balcony Sessions – solo performances from the Symphony’s new offices in Carmel at the corner of 7th and San Carlos.

- The theft of lead from his local church roof has led to a semi-retired private eye from Suffolk penning a five-star supernatural love story.
