• Leading artists from across the world come together for African Painted Dog conservation - Embargoed: 15 September 2020 - 12 noon GMT Leading artists from across the world come together for African Painted Dog conservation Launching on Tuesday 15 September, a Global Art Fundraiser ‘LYCAON – Artists for Painted Dogs’ features over 30 international artists and photographers, who have come together to raise awareness and funds globally, for the endangered African Painted Dog (also known as Painted Wolves or African Wild Dogs). Artwork is available to preview from 29 September and go on sale at 12 noon (BST) on 6 October. A century ago, approximately 500,000 Painted Dogs roamed the African continent. Less than 6,600 including around 700 breeding pairs, remain in the wild today, as a result of ongoing habitat fragmentation, snare poaching, road kills and diseases caught from domestic dogs. Artists are donating 50% or more of the proceeds from the sale of their artwork to Painted Dog Conservation in Zimbabwe and Wildlife ACT in South Africa. “Art is such a powerful tool to spread awareness and wonderment at the natural world. Movement plays a huge role in her work, the animals within it will always be ‘doing’ something, either naturally or as a metaphor for deeper meaning depending on where their journey takes her. She has always had an affinity with Painted Dogs since first seeing them in the late 90’s, a moment that stuck with her and has resulted in many depictions of them throughout her career. Sketching is imperative and Heather watches and observes wildlife in its natural state wherever possible. The work should therefore flourish with its own life on the canvas and often does mutate as she paints and draws - whatever happens then is instinct and lends itself to a far more organic and often spontaneous artwork. PDC’s focal research activities are to monitor distribution, densities and demography of Painted Dogs, in order to understand direct and indirect threats to packs in the greater Hwange ecosystem and the Zambezi Valley in Zimbabwe. PDC monitor more than six packs of painted dogs on a daily basis across Hwange National Park and 4 packs in Mana Pools and the Mid-Zambezi. Their mission is to create an environment where painted dogs can thrive. PDC have put together a conservation model that will really work in the long term, and make a significant difference to the Painted Dog population in Zimbabwe. They employ more than 60 people from the local villages to run their conservation programmes and education and outreach programmes. These efforts span everything from the Anti-Poaching Unit team which patrol local areas daily to provide a direct form of protection for the dogs, the Rehabilitation Facility where injured and orphaned dogs are treated before returning them to the wild. Many African game reserves do not have the funds or capacity to run effective wildlife conservation projects despite monitoring being an essential part of conservation. • Award-winning County Antrim writer’s new book - A retired County Antrim professor has embarked on some creative writing to fill his spare-time and learn to read again. And Jim Shields has already racked up a hat-trick of awards for his memorable short stories. A career in industry and then academia did not enhance the 77-year-old’s appreciation of fiction.
