Lynda Ann admits the original idea for her magical adventures began with a few throw away lines at the factory where she works.
She explained: “I got the idea for Mr Nolly and the Magic Ladderfrom two work colleagues a few years ago.
“We were at work and my friend David had been given a brand-new pair of step ladders as part of his job.
“To our amusement, he became quite attached to them and wouldn’t let anyone else use them.
“One day, another colleague jokingly made the comment that ‘anyone would think those ladders had magical properties the way Dave holds on to them’.
“He then turned to me saying, ‘You could write a book about this!’.”

Carmel, CA, December 22, 2020 — Max’s Helping Paws Foundation has received a Community Impact Grant of $15,000 to help the Foundation continue assisting pets in a health crisis over the next 18 months.
The grant came from the Kathleen and Howard Marks Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Community Impact Grants address critical issues and opportunities for five primary program areas that advance the Community Foundation’s mission and vision for Monterey County. These grants are based on an analysis of local needs, aspirations, assets and opportunities for achieving strategic results.
“The addition of Chestnut Fund grants has left a gap in funding for our core programs, and this grant will help fill that gap,” said Dayna Klein, co-founder and executive director of Max’s. “This is our first grant from the Community Foundation and we’re honored and excited to receive these much-needed funds to help us on our mission.”

- Yorkshire author inspired by grandfather to write book
- Inspired by his own grandfather’s remarkable story, new Staffordshire author John Smith has just published his debut novel to critical acclaim.
The epic Principles and Passions 1896-1903 has been met with a growing number of entirely five-star reviews from thrilled readers.
John’s gritty love story, which is set amongst the steel mills of late 19th century South Yorkshire, has been described as ‘a brilliant book’, ‘a vivid account of working-class life’, and ‘a gripping tale of struggle’.
Principles and Passions 1896-1903 centres on the struggles and heroics of Jack Prendergast, who rises from the brutal shopfloor to lead calls for widespread social change.
And the majority of John’s captivating novel is based on his own maternal grandfather’s heroics.
He explained: “Jack Prendergast was my maternal grandfather and, with poetic licence, Principles and Passions 1896-1903 is based on his life.
“He was a full-time trade union officer, who went on to become a Labour councillor and Mayor in South Yorkshire.

“A bit of a Dick Whittington story, I guess.”
Although the romantic aspects of Prendergast’s life in Principles and Passions 1896-1903 are purely fictional, the narrative is both compelling and convincing.
His love-interest, Florence Davies, brings her own story and adds to the sub-plots which weave their way throughout John’s authoritative novel.
He explained: “Florence is fictional albeit my maternal grandmother’s family did move to Yorkshire from Longton in Stoke-on-Trent.
“When Jack meets Florence Davies, he is captivated by her.
“She is brave and resolute and dreams of a career in nursing.
“But Florence is fleeing a terrible secret, and as they are on the verge of beginning a life together her brother, Thomas, is drawn into a disastrous plot which threatens to shatter everything they have.”
Prior to his recent retirement, John enjoyed a successful career in the food industry.
The grandfather’s lifetime wait to become a writer is all the more remarkable as his father had banned him as a child from regular visits to the library.
John explained: “I was an avid reader from early days, but my father, who was a police officer, suggested I should not go to the local library everyday as my motives might be suspicious.
“Like most children I wrote stories but my drive to write was always there, only interrupted by a career.”
Since the release of Principles and Passions 1896-1903 it has received a string of five-star reviews.
Reviewer Jennifer T stated: “What a great read… seriously couldn’t put it down.”

- Scottish geographer Neil Kitching is hoping to take care of some unfinished business next year – by saving the planet.
The 54-year-old has made a good start with the release of his book, Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises, which was released in October to critical acclaim.
Not only has it gone to number one in the environmental book charts, but amongst its growing number of supporters is broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough.
Over the decades Neil had grown increasingly frustrated by society’s ignorance and inaction over the impending climate crisis.

“Climate change has crept up on us just the way the scientists predicted.
“I have lived with a frustration that people aren’t doing enough about it and so I wanted to do something about that.

Neil began writing Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises last winter with an aim of publishing ahead of the COP-26 climate conference in Glasgow - initially to be held in November 2020, now rescheduled for November 2021. Neil said " I am in the right place, at the right time" as a Scottish energy expert and author in the lead up to the most important global climate conference - to be held on my doorstep.
For each of his 27 chapters, he sourced experts in their fields and asked them to review his work adding credence to the arguments he makes in his book.
Neil’s authoritative finished book considers the psychology that drives people to buy more ‘stuff’ and whether this makes them happier.
In plain language, he also describes ten building blocks that provide everyone with a foundation to create their own sensible climate change solutions.Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises also includes five common-sense principles to guide everyone in the decisions that they make.
Neil, who has climbed all of Scotland’s 282 Munros, added: “By applying the principles detailed in the book to our daily lives – our diets, homes, travel, shopping and leisure - we can regenerate nature, improve our society, be healthier, happier and lead more fulfilled lives.
“This book will fill any gaps in people’s understanding of climate change and nature loss.

- St Helens woman’s life with Alzheimer husband is hit book
- Joan Crank doesn’t have the scientific degrees of some, but she can still rightly call herself an authority on Alzheimer’s disease.
For a decade the 78-year-old from St Helens cared for her husband as he lived with the progressive form of dementia.
During that time Joan thoroughly researched her husband’s condition to find the best methods of slowing down his deterioration.
And all the while the couple lived life to the full - walking the Great Wall of China, cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage, birdwatching in South America and feeding sea eagles in South-east Asia.
Joan’s husband, Dave, died in 2012.
But his widow has continued her work to help others suffering from Alzheimer’s.
Joan has now released her honest and enlightening account of the final years she spent with Dave, Always Look on the Bright Side.
The mum-of-two said: “My husband had this cruel disease for almost ten years, and I learned such a lot in that time.
“Always Look on the Bright Side, as the title says is about living the best life you can with dementia.
“I want the reader to see that life goes on, encourage people to maintain friendships, and with support even make new friends.
“People shouldn’t be afraid of pushing for a diagnosis to obtain medication which won’t cure but may slow it down, and not to be afraid to ask for help.”
Throughout Dave’s 10 years with dementia, Joan kept a daily diary.
With encouragement from a creative writing tutor, the retired children’s ward nurse developed her entries into a compelling and beautifully told story.
Always Look on the Bright Side is a story of hope, humour, happiness and, above all, love.
Joan’s book, which has already reached number one in Amazon’s Ageing chart, has been described by reviewers as being ‘touching and poignant’.

- Bedford Victorian hero remembered in hit book
- One of the country’s most remarkable Victorian adventurers has been brought back to life in a thrilling new biography.
Tales of swashbuckling courage made Colonel Frederick Burnaby a household name during the late 19th century.
Not only was Burnaby the hero of many military conflicts, but he also mastered ballooning, learned seven languages, published several books, and helped reform the Tory party.
Although memorials to the golden boy of imperialist Britain can be found in Windsor, Birmingham, and his hometown of Bedford, retired teacher Tim Machin is making sure the full thrilling story of Burnaby is not forgotten.
Tim, who himself is a celebrated academic, has just published Colonel Frederick Burnaby 1842-85, A Great Victorian Eccentric to critical acclaim.
The idea for researching and writing the biography came from Tim’s days as Boarding Housemaster of the house named after Burnaby at Bedford School.
He explained: “I was needing a project when I retired.
“Frederick Burnaby only lived 42 years, but in that space of time he achieved a great deal.
“He was a soldier in the Blues - killed in the Sudan fighting against the Mahdi - he was an author, and his two main books are still in print.
“He was the first man to balloon to France solo, he was a war correspondent for The Times, spoke seven languages, and was an important influence in the modernising of the Tory party.”
Since the publication of Colonel Frederick Burnaby 1842-85, A Great Victorian Eccentric it has reached number three in Amazon’s biography charts.
Tim’s latest book has also earned rave reviews, described as being ‘packed with incident and adventure’ and ‘a canter through late Victorian Britain on the shoulders of … a truly fearless and heroic figure’.
Following Burnaby’s death in 1885 there was a 5,000-word obituary to him published in The Times amidst wide public grief.
An obelisk in the grounds of St Philips Cathedral in Birmingham, paid for by public subscription, was erected to commemorate his life.
Tim, who was granted an Open Scholarship to read Modern History at Oxford when he was only 17, has delved beneath the acts of bravery in his authoritative and hugely enjoyable biography.
The 73-year-old grandfather added: “A friend of Burnaby said that he knew no other man who was so devoid of fear.
“He couldn't resist a challenge as the book shows.
“He bordered onto to controversy and in many ways, he was unorthodox - above all he was optimistic that he could overcome any problems he faced.”
Tim has previously published well-received historical books, Coward’s War and From Bedford to the Somme.

- 29 FREE ONLINE Dance Classes
- The Aim High Dance Academy, has officially begun their project of bringing online classes in lieu of studio based classes that has been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. These online classes have taken the form of 29 FREE WEEKLY ONLINE classes ranging from ballet to street-dance to yoga to pre/post-natal to parent/toddlers classes/career mentoring courses. The academy has produced a packed time table (attached) in order to offer weekly free classes suited to everyone of all age and abilities.
Started by Hayley Rea in 2010, thousands of youngsters have attended Aim High Dance Academy classes at its Herne Hill, South Norwood, Lewisham and Merton Centres over the past 10 years and in addition to their community based sessions they work in many nurseries, schools and youth organisations. Hayley has been a qualified dance teacher since the age of 18 and has taught dance for Sadler's Wells, the London Youth Dance, Oval House Theatre, East London Dance Organisation and many, many more. She’s especially passionate about encouraging her students, whatever their ability, to help them explore all aspects of dancing and the range of different styles:
“Our purpose is to provide a home from home dance environment where we can promote leadership, teamwork, creativity and physical fitness training in a fun, safe and educational manner. We mentor those who would like to turn a passion into a career and entertain the community by showing the talent hidden amongst them. We believe now more than ever our services are needed to support our communities’ mental health and wellbeing and support the dance industry by transforming, developing and continuing our services”
Our focus has shifted towards online teaching in order to accommodate the ongoing climate and in response to community needs have decided to offer these completely for free. Now all classes are being hosted through WebEx in order to continue the teaching that was going on before lockdown and keeping everyone active and exercising.
Aim High Dance Academy’s online sessions first launched in October with our adult classes; Adult Street Dance, 80’s workout and yoga. We’ve had over 70 people register for these sessions and will be launching Vogue in the new year. ‘We try our best in every class to provide a welcoming environment where people can have fun, aspire/achieve and forget about the daily stresses in life’ says Hayley. ‘We have also found our sessions are a great way to beat isolation and loneliness, launching our project Keep Moving, Keep Grooving, Keep Connected’.
Hayley and her teachers have been running these classes for free every week in order to bring some form of normality to those who are feeling isolated and lonely, giving them an opportunity to interact with others in an enjoyable way. Aim High has also begun to expand their reach across England, taking advantage of the accessibility of online classes, by reaching out to communities as far as Manchester to offer their services, connecting communities far and wide whilst also keeping existing communities connected in a time where interaction is scarce.
Those who have participated in some of the sessions so far say;
‘I enjoy all of it. Trying something new and doing physical activity to music.’
‘Classes are fun. Great music and nice routines.’
‘I enjoy the Instructors enthusiasm’
