- Orion Reversible Flow Fans Feature Directional Flow and Speed Control in One Unit
- NORTHVALE, New Jersey, USA – New Yorker Electronics has announced Orion Fans’ release of its new series of microcontroller-based, Reversible Flow Fans rated up to IP68. By utilizing PWM signals to control fan speed, these fans provide a solution for difficult cooling requirements. Fan speed and airflow direction control can now be achieved with one fan without supplementing excess wires or circuitry.
Previously, two fans were required if the designer wanted to achieve two directions of airflow. This arrangement added cost to the bill of materials, required more area in the design to accommodate both fans, increased maintenance requirements, and lowered product reliability.
Orion Fans’ Reversible Flow Fans are a specialty design that enables some unique uses:
• Outdoor applications where the device intakes air in one direction, but a periodic reverse flow ensures air pathways do not become clogged with environmental debris
• Equipment where seasonal environmental changes require different airflow of intaking versus exhausting air
• Situations where a “confidence check” is needed to confirm the proper operation of airflow monitoring sensors
• Applications where dynamic control of airflow pathways is needed, and large airflow check valves may be difficult or impossible to integrate

In typical fan speed control, PWM control provides a fixed-frequency AC square wave signal to the fan, and the duty cycle of the waveform is altered to match the desired speed. Reversible fans extend this control paradigm by segmenting the PWM duty cycle curve into “Forward” versus “Reverse” regions. This segmentation still allows for speed control over a condensed duty cycle range, while enabling control of the direction of flow without requiring additional control wires or circuitry. In most cases, a simple firmware or software change in the customer’s equipment facilitates direction control with minimal disruption of industry standard control assumptions.

- ADDISON, Texas, USA – Omni Pro Electronics has announced LSI/CSI’s release of six new additions to its extensive line of Standard ICs. Designated LS7190, LS7191, LS7192, LS7193, LS7194 and LS7195, these new devices are versions of a three-terminal digital potentiometer to replace mechanical potentiometers.
The clocks drive an internal 6-bit up/down counter with a count N ranging between 0 and 63 to correspond to 64 wiper-tap positions of a resistor chain consisting of 64 equal resistors. The LS7190 and LS7193 interfaces with quadrature clocks from incremental encoders.
The LS7191/92 and LS7194/95 interfaces with non-quadrature up (A) and down (B) clocks. A and B inputs for LS7190/91 and LS7193/94 are debounced allowing these signals to be sourced from mechanical encoders or push-button switches. A and B inputs for the LS7192 and LS7195 are not debounced so that fast clocks from electronic clock sources can be used. They supply 3 to 5 volts and are available in 20K, 50K and 100K versions.
The LSI/CSI Digital Potentiometers are used as replacements for mechanical potentiometers and for potentiometer adjustments. They can also be used for remote adjustments of instrumentation for gain, offset, time constant, line impedance matching, audio equipment volume control and more.
