- MPAI calls for technologies supporting three new standards
- Geneva, Switzerland – 19 July 2022. Today the international, non-profit, unaffiliated Moving Picture, Audio and Data Coding by Artificial Intelligence (MPAI) standards developing organisation has concluded its 22nd General Assembly. Among the outcomes is the publication of three Calls for Technologies supporting the Use Cases and Functional Requirements identified for extensions of two existing standards – AI Framework and Multimodal Conversation – and for a new standard – Neural Network Watermarking.
Each of the three Calls is accompanied by two documents. The first document identifies the Use Cases whose implementation the standard is intended to enable and the Functional Requirements that the proposed data formats and associated technologies are expected to support.
The extended AI Framework standard (MPAI-AIF V2 https://mpai.community/standards/mpai-aif/) will retain the functionalities specified by Version 1 and will enable the components of the Framework to access security functionalities.
The extended Multimodal Conversation (MPAI-MMC V2 https://mpai.community/standards/mpai-mmc/) will enable a variety of new use cases such as separation and location of audio-visual objects in a scene (e.g., human beings, their voices and generic objects); the ability of a party in metaverse1 to import an environmental setting and a group of avatars from metaverse2; representation and interpretation of the visual features of a human to extract information about their internal state (e.g., emotion) or to accurately reproduce the human as an avatar.
Neural Network Watermarking (MPAI-NNW https://mpai.community/standards/mpai-nnw/) will provide the means to assess if the insertion of a watermark deteriorates the performance of a neural network; how well a watermark detector can detect the presence of a watermark and a watermark decoder can retrieve the payload; and how to quantify the computational cost to inject, detect, and decode a payload.
The second document accompanying a Call for Technologies is the Framework Licence for the standard that will be developed from the technologies submitted in response to the Call. The Framework Licence is a licence without critical data such as cost, dates, rates etc.

- Mara calls on African innovators to tackle last mile payment challenges in Kenya
- Mara, the Pan-African blockchain platform has opened applications for African innovators to participate in the “Hack The Mara” competition set to take place from 17th-26th of September 2022. The competition looks to bring together African Developers for one week to create innovative solutions that will ensure all parties in the Masai Mara ecosystem can have visibility into the disbursement process for funded social impact projects.
In the Masai Mara, landowners, wildlife and tourism depend on one another for survival. COVID -19 brought tourism to a standstill jeopardising revenues previously realised and threatening to bring the ecosystem down. The purpose of the Mara Hackathon is to develop systems that will ensure that donor funds disbursed for community transformation reach the intended beneficiaries. The solutions prototyped during the hackathon are expected to strengthen the financial sustainability of ongoing conservation projects in the Mara for better livelihoods.

- Indonesia threatens to block Google and Meta if they do not agree to new regulations - TechInformed
- Google, Meta, and other big tech firms are being urged by the Indonesian government to register under its new licensing rules, or risk their platforms being blocked.
Both Google and Meta are among several tech firms still yet to comply, despite the deadline being only days away on 20 July.
The licensing rules, released in November 2020, allow authorities to order platforms to remove content marked as unlawful, or that “disturbs public order” within 24 hours, or even four hours if deemed urgent enough.
Communications minister Johnny G. Plate told Reuters that he and his ministry urged companies to register before sanctions were applied and that platforms could face being blocked if they fail to comply.
More than 5,900 Indonesian companies and 108 international companies have registered, including social media app TikTok and music streaming platform Spotify, according to communications ministry data.
Platforms still yet to register include Google, Twitter, and Meta, which consists of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The new licensing rules apply to all domestic and foreign Electronic Service Operators.
The rules will also allow law enforcement or government agencies to request communications and personal data from specific users on the platforms.
The Indonesian government says that the new licensing system was created to ensure internet service providers protect consumer data, and that online content is used in a “positive and productive” way.
However, activists have argued that the new rules will pose a threat to freedom of expression and privacy.
“Our analysis shows that this will be the most repressive regulation of its kind in the region,” said Nenden Arum, from digital rights group, the Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SAFEnet).
Minister Plate said the registration requirement was administrative and not about content.
With a population of 270 million, there were an estimated 191 million social media users in Indonesia as of February 2022, according to Statista.

- Zoom has won awards for having the happiest employees in America. TechInformed speaks to Zoom CIO Advisor Magnus Falk about why that might be and how it can help other enterprises employee wellbeing.
Over the past two and a half years there’s been a seismic shift in the way we work.
Many employees were forced to switch from the office to a remote working during the early days of the pandemic and now, in many cases, are negotiating a hybrid environment.
While this shift to hybrid working has given many a better work-life balance, some workers still crave the community aspect of working in the same environment and find remote working isolating.
But how does a tech company like Zoom, which played such a pivotal role in switching to the world of remote work, address this need in its own offices? And what is the video conferencing firm doing to help customers that use its services with their own employee wellness?
Zoom has consistently been recognised as a company with some of the happiest employees in America, reaching the top 10 in 2021, and number one in 2020, during the lockdowns caused by the pandemic – which suggests it has the hybrid working model pretty figured out.
According to Magnus Falk, CIO Advisor at Zoom, employee happiness is in Zoom’s DNA, adding that employee wellness should always be a part of a founder’s vision.
Falk explained that Eric Yuan, founder of Zoom, was unhappy at his previous workplace [Cisco WebEx] because his calls for a better video conferencing UX were repeatedly ignored.
And not only was Yuan unhappy, but he saw that his customers were too, so he quit his job to address these issues with the launch Zoom Communications.
Falk recalls a time when video calls used to be stressful experiences thanks to technical issues that meant someone was unable to join or somebody else was unable to talk, or it took about 10 minutes to start a meeting and by then everyone was frustrated.
“Yuan built Zoom to be the easy-to-use, multi-platform, stress-buster that it is today by making it video-first,” Falk explained.
“Now, you hit one button, and boom, you’re in and the meeting starts,” Falk enthuses. “So, I think wellbeing actually stems from that.”
Happy apps
According to Falk, Yuan’s negative experiences in his previous role has informed Zoom’s measures to keep its own employees loyal and happy and they are based around three principles.
The first is purpose: “You’ve got to know what purpose you have, and you have to know you’re working for a purposeful organisation.”
Zoom does this by keeping a check on “the Zoom happiness measure,” which is a system dedicated to recognising when an employee may not be happy and proud of their work.
It has also set up a charity function called Zoom Cares where the meetings app donates to organisations and encourages employees to do the same by matching their donations to charities.
The firm also urges employees to volunteer and help organisations they care about, giving them a heightened sense of purpose.
The second principle is care. “It’s really important to know you have someone who cares about you in your organisation,” Falk says. In the office, he explains that it could be someone who works two desks down from you, and if you’re working from home, knowing someone cares “does transcend” through the screen.
For Falk, it’s important to have someone who will notice when a colleague is burning out and working too hard.
The third principle- one which he points out that the whole world woke up to during the pandemic – is flexibility. Says Falk: “What is the point in getting someone to travel in to answer emails in an office?”
Flexibility is also key for workplace wellness
When coming to work includes expenses such as travel and food, and time spent commuting rather than spending time doing something more productive and enjoyable, “flexibility becomes a real wellbeing choice,” he argues.
“I think it’s good that the remote option starts changing the dynamic. Now, you’re fitting work around your life, rather than fitting your life around work,” he adds.
On top of these three principles, Falk says there are a number of benefits a company can offer to its employees that fit specific situations such as particular care to aid those who have special needs.
Additionally, Zoom has a range of policies such as encouraging no internal meetings every Wednesday, so employees can spend time focusing on their own work and clients.
Other efforts include a group within Zoom that is literally dedicated to happiness, which creates events to encourage employees to come in and interact. “Not always drinks, but foosball competitions as well and other simple things that people want to do,” he says.
He claims these activities benefit the company as well “because they’re mingling, or coming into the office that afternoon because something is happening.”
Customer wellness
Zoom offers 1000s of applications on the Zoom marketplace, including wellness apps, and this is something that firms using the service for their own internal communication can take advantage of.
Falk points out that these apps can integrate “into the heart of a Zoom call”, live for employees to use together, Falk explains.

Zoom’s apps include ‘Wellness Coach’ which offers employees desk-friendly workouts, stretching practices, mindfulness tools to help productivity and meditations that can be used as part of a meeting.
Nutrition and fitness service WW (formerly Weight Watchers) also has an app available on Zoom called ‘Wellness that Works’ which reminds employees to stay hydrated throughout the day, offers breathing techniques, healthy dinner inspiration and healthy snack ideas for those working from home.
There’s also an app called ‘Donations’ by donation app Pledge which allows employers to fundraise during virtual Zoom events.
Besides apps, Zoom has decisively given customers options to make their Zoom meetings less stressful and more enjoyable.
While the solution was built with keeping usability as stress-free as possible in terms of joining meetings seamlessly, there’s the option of hiding self-view during meetings.
Self-view can be a cause for quite an unnatural and uncomfortable conversation experience, “I’m not holding up a mirror when you’re sitting talking to someone. So it’s been taken away so you can just be natural,” explains Falk.

In terms of the future of work “The worm has turned”, Falk hails, and it’s changing for the better.
He predicts that, for the majority of organisations, flexible working will be the default option for those who don’t have to be located on site; and wellness will improve as people fit work around their lives.
The CIO Advisor adds that technology will remain at the heart of making hybrid working work and he is very excited about the next generation of video walls – something that Zoom has on its roadmap.
“I think I’d be reasonably happy to invest in a video wall that was always on, looking into an office, Falk explains. “Someone could walk up to my video wall and have a conversation, and you would feel like you’re there but you’re not.”
He concludes that the choice between remote and office “will start blending a little bit more, it will be much more seamless.”

- Twitter sues Musk over collapsed $44bn takeover - TechInformed
- Twitter has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk after the billionaire cancelled his proposed $44 billion takeover of the social media giant.
Musk canned the acquisition earlier this week, accusing Twitter of failing to provide important information around the number of bots and fake accounts on the platform, something Twitter has denied.
The social media company is now taking legal action against the Tesla boss in an effort to force through the acquisition. In its filing with a Delaware court, the company argued Musk must honour his agreement to buy Twitter at $0.54 a share, following a “long list of material contractual breaches” which had “cast a pall over Twitter and its business”.
Because the deal included a provision called a “specific performance clause”, the court could force Musk to buy the company as long as he has financing in place, which he claimed to have secured in May.
“Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, Musk apparently believes that he, unlike every party subject to Delaware contract law, is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its operations, destroy stockholder value and walk away,” the company stated in the lawsuit.
It further argued Musk had decided to pull out after seeing shares in his electric car company Tesla plummet after the deal for Twitter was announced. Musk was planning to offload shares in his electric vehicle firm in order to fund the acquisition, but Tesla stock has declined by more than $100 billion from a peak in November 2021.
“Rather than bear the cost of the market downturn, as the merger agreement requires, Musk wants to shift it to Twitter’s shareholders,” the company claimed.
Musk could also be forced to pay a $1bn exit fee for walking away from the deal, a penalty he indicated in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission he is seeking to evade. Should the SEC determine the Tesla boss is required to make the payment, and he refuses, Musk would face severe penalties, such as being banned from leading several of the companies he runs, such as Tesla and SpaceX.
Musk has been a vocal critic of Twitter, despite also being one of the platform’s most prominent and prolific users. Even after agreeing a deal to buy the company, Musk criticised Twitter’s policy on removing what it claims is harmful content.
When pulling the plug on the deal, Musk’s representatives explained: “Sometimes Twitter has ignored Mr Musk’s requests, sometimes it has rejected them for reasons that appear to be unjustified and sometimes it has claimed to comply while giving Mr Musk incomplete or unusable information.”

- Uber files expose murky tactics used by ride sharing app for European expansion - TechInformed
- More than 124,000 of Uber’s confidential documents have been leaked to The Guardian, exposing how it attempted to lobby Joe Biden, hide data from the police, and persuade France’s Emmanuel Macron to change laws in its favour.
The leaked “Uber files” include 83,000 emails and 1,000 files exposing conversations involving the taxi firm, spanning an almost five-year period.
Uber’s co-founder Travis Kalanick, who was running the taxi service app at the time, is in the spotlight for his attempts at pushing the cab service into cities around the world, even if it meant potentially breaking laws and breaching taxi regulations.
The Uber files reveal how the company spent $90 million a year lobbying politicians, such as US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and former UK chancellor George Osborne, in its effort to impact the European taxi industry.
This includes speaking with French leader Macron, who told Uber he would reform laws in the firm’s favour, despite French taxi drivers protesting heavily in the streets against the app.
The leaks also expose how ex-EU digital commissioner Neelie Kroes lobbied for the firm, even after her term at the EU had ended, possibly in breach of EU ethics rules.
Uber also employed use of a so-called ‘kill switch’ according to the leak. This system limited police access to the company’s data, such as lists of drivers, which Uber believed would harm its growth.
“Please hit the kill switch ASAP,” Kalanick sent in one email shared by The Washington Post. “Access must be shut down in AMS,” he wrote, referring to the Amsterdam office.
The kill switch had been used in The Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, India, Romania, Hungary, and at least three times in France.
Uber claims now that the ‘kill switch’ has not been in place since 2017, when the new chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, took over Kalanick’s position.
In response to the leak, Uber admitted in a statement that “mistakes and missteps,” were made, but it had been transformed under the leadership of Khosrowshahi.
“Dara rewrote the company’s values, revamped the leadership team, made safety a top company priority, implemented best-in-class corporate governance, hired an independent board chair, and installed the rigorous controls and compliance necessary to operate as a public company.”
To facilitate a global investigation, the Guardian shared the data with 180 journalists at more than 40 media organisations via the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
