Among the various positions Steven held at the University of Brighton were Head of School of Service Management, and Head of Operations for the School of Sport and Service Management. He also served as President of the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce for two years.
The PhD holder has authored and co-authored a total of ten books on management and human resources within the sport, leisure and hospitality sectors.
But Horseracing: A Sport of Enchantment is his most personal publication to date.As well as substantially researching the history and cultural elements of horseracing, Steven dug deep into the archives of his own family.

- The nephew of Britain’s Bravest Brothers has finally provided the platform for the woman that their remarkable story forgot.
Retired Royal Military Academy Sandhurst lecturer Michael Seagrim was inspired to put pen to paper following a front-page story in the Mail on Sunday about his uncles.
While factually correct, the war time bravery of Derek and Hugh Seagrim was only part of a much larger story.
Michael has righted the wrong with the release of his fascinating insight into their mother, Amabel, as well as their other three brothers.
Since its recent publication, Unique Medals from the King has reached the top ten in Amazon’s historical chart.
Michael said: “In 2019 Lord Ashcroft wrote a story in the Mail on Sunday about my two famous uncles who were awarded the Victoria Cross and George Cross.
“Their photographic staff chopped in half the photo I’d given to the Imperial War Museum, and they published the half showing the future VC and GC winners, as little boys, on the front page of the paper.
“The story was called Britain’s Bravest Brothers.
“Likewise, Lord Ashcroft’s story ignored half of the family and underplayed the importance of my grandmother.”
Lieutenant Colonel Derek Seagrim was awarded the Victoria Cross for his selfless leadership in 1943 during a battle with the Germans in southern Tunisia.
But just days after his heroics he was fatally wounded, with the medal being awarded posthumously.
The following year Major Hugh Seagrim had led a number of successful guerrilla style ambushes against the Japanese in the dense forests of Burma.
But as the enemy soldiers began torturing and killing innocent villagers, he gave himself up to stop the vicious reprisals.
He was executed in a POW camp a few months later.
Derek and Hugh remain the only brothers to have ever been, separately, honoured with their country’s foremost gallantry awards.
While Unique Medals from the King masterfully retells the story of both Derek and Hugh, it also follows the fortunes of the other three Seagrim brothers, including Michael’s father, Jack.
And at the heart of the gripping narrative is their highly influential and dependable mother.
Michael, from Berkshire, added: “Unique Medals from the King focuses on the suffering of the mother of five young sons, who became army officers.
“Her sense of fortitude/pluck and service is passed onto the next generation.
“She becomes the only person to collect the VC and the GC from King George 6th at Buckingham Palace and then wear them on her right chest during a Remembrance Day Parade in Eastbourne in November 1948.”

Sas Dijk, who writes under the name S N Dijk, has just published the thrilling adventure story, Longhowls, to critical acclaim.
The 63-year-old PhD graduate has brought together exotic animals, curious children, some unscrupulous antiques smugglers as well as wonderful illustrations.
And it was all inspired by a prime-time TV show.
Sas, whose favourite authors include Graham Greene, Iris Murdoch and Agatha Christie, said: “When friends and neighbours, Charlie and Sally, are accepted onto the vacation scheme at the nearby animal park their lives change forever.
“Not only will they meet the wild animals in the safari park on the Longhowls estate, but they also get to work beside the personnel employed by owner Lord Bubble.
“Soon they find that some people around them have second agendas and when they discover treasure, they are drawn into the murky world of antiquity smuggling.
“The book is inspired by Longleat and the television series Animal Park.
“It was when I was watching Animal Park that I got the idea of a children’s book set in an ancient manor house.”
Longhowls follows the fortunes of Sally and Charlie as they learn from the various animal keepers and husbandry experts.

But Longhowls is also a thrilling adventure with regular unexpected twists, particularly after the two 10-year-old uncover Roman treasure.
Although Sas enjoyed a hugely successful academic and scientific career before his recent retirement, he always harboured an ambition to become a novelist.
He added: “I started writing when I was seven years old and wrote on a person who fascinated me, Ivanhoe.
“It is difficult to pin-point one person who inspired me to write - rather it was an accumulation of books and ideas that have slowly brought me to this moment in my life when I realise that writing is like massaging the soul and I cannot do without it.
“In my working and academic life, I acquired an MD and a PhD, and would say that my scientific work is my greatest achievement.
“But I hope to now have a literary career.”

- Fundraising single launched to support #KindnessVsCancer campaign
- A mother living with cancer has called for people to get behind a fundraising song Hope Engulfs Us, which aims to raise money for her KindnessVsCancer campaign.
Laura Kendrick, 42, found out she had stage 4 bowel cancer in 2020, and it was during her diagnosis and subsequent treatment where she experienced first-hand a lack of compassion from her cancer health care teams.
Treated more like a statistic rather than a human being, Laura was often delivered news about her illness in a very cold way. On many occasions she felt written off by her health care provider thanks to the use of negative language, which severely impacted her mental health and left her without hope.
This prompted Laura, who is HR Transformation Lead for NHS England and NHS Improvement’s South East region, to kick start her #KindnessVsCancer campaign and raise at least £50,000 to fund training for oncology teams across the NHS.
Laura wants the training to focus on ensuring health care teams understand the critical importance of compassion and empathy towards patients, and how it’s vital that hope remains during diagnosis, treatment and beyond. It will also cover the role of humanity in cancer care and the significance of mind-body connection.
As part of the fundraising drive for #KindnessVsCancer, Laura’s close friend, singer songwriter Sion Whiley, has written and recorded Hope Engulfs Us - a song based on Laura’s experiences as a cancer patient.
To help create the lyrics for Hope Engulfs Us, Laura spent time having moving conversations with fellow patients, who helped describe the trauma and heartbreak of a diagnosis. These people also felt, like Laura, that the cancer services they received often lacked empathy.
Laura shared these words with Sion who went on to write the song, which aims not only to raise money but push home the importance of continued kindness, compassion and empathy in cancer care.
As the song’s lyrics go “All I have is hope. Please don’t crush my hope”.
Laura said:
“Our fundraising song Hope Engulfs Us encompasses the fact that hope is everything to a cancer patient and can be a lifeline in the darkest of times.
“I have such admiration for my colleagues working within the NHS, but it’s a huge system and the mechanistic approach to cancer care is simply not good enough for patients.
“Whilst I have experienced some excellent care, unfortunately that has been limited and my experience overall has been challenging. At times, the interaction I’ve had with health care professionals has broken my soul and deeply impacted my mental health.
“I'm passionate about using my experience as both a senior professional in the NHS and a cancer patient to revolutionise and transform the current approach to cancer care in this country.
“That’s why I started the #KindnessVsCancer campaign, to ensure that health care professionals get the training they need to treat cancer patients with kindness, compassion and provide them with much needed hope.
“It would be amazing to get Hope Engulfs Us in the charts to help us raise as much money as possible and achieve our goal!”
Hope Engulfs Us is out now, and Laura and Sion are encouraging everyone to purchase, download or stream the song, which is available on most major music platforms.
All proceeds from the song will go straight to the #KindnessVsCancer campaign and help transform services for cancer patients. Donations can also be made to the campaign directly via Just Giving.
