• Global Electronic Components Shortage - As demand continues to rise for consumer electronics, chip-heavy vehicles, and smart appliances, semiconductor manufacturers across the globe are continuing to feel the pressure. Chip shortage is affecting more than just the auto industry. Shortages are now reaching across all manufacturers, industries, and products. Shortages aren’t the only problem -- so are rising prices. As demand for electronic components rises, the supply dwindles, and costs increase. When will it end? The comeback from the semiconductor shortage will not be quick. Some factories that were shut down by natural disasters are still repairing the damage and trying to reopen production. But as the demand is staying high, there will need to be new facilities created to cater for the increase in demand. The time, expertise and money needed to start a new factory will be too much for smaller firms to manage, so then the hole in the market needs to be filled by larger corporations like Intel and Samsung. Both companies currently have plans to open new fabs in America, but it will be a while before they can start production. Intel’s ambitious plan to construct the one of the largest chip factories ever in Ohio would alleviate demand, but is not due to start production until 2025. Similarly, Samsung’s Texas fab will not be operational until 2024. Despite smaller factories opening, the substantial backlog will not be solved by these alone. There will need to be a combination of an increase in production, time efficiency and, with the pandemic in mind, automation to decrease person-to-person contact. There will also need to be a stock of chips manufactured to avoid shortages in future. Europe and America have both put an emphasis on increasing their domestic chip production in the next decade, in the hopes that this will prevent importing issues in the future. The speed at which technology is currently being developed also puts manufacturers in a tight spot. Not only are more electronic devices being produced all the time, but the technology of the components within them is also advancing quickly. While it is difficult to forecast entirely, experts say the shortage could last a few more years. • Norfolk award-winning writer’s ‘excellent’ new book - It has taken a career in screen- and magazine article writing for G C McGhee to come full circle and finally publish a novel. The 62-year-old award-winning scribe from Norfolk has earned plaudits galore for his short stories and non-fiction articles, as well as television and film scripts. But publishing a novel had remained on the ‘to do’ list until he finally took the plunge last year and turned a pilot script into his first full-length book to hit the shelves. Talking on the phone while wearing a mask makes conversation sound mushy. Wearing a mask is uncomfortable. Eyeglasses steam up. The list goes on.  Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids and cochlear implants (CIs) in particular pose a great risk for difficulty. When one removes glasses, flips off a hat or hood, or removes a scarf, hearing aids can go flying off the ear. An active adult or child may forget to check that the hearing aid is still in place.  My colleagues and I have already gotten a few calls from patients who lost hearing aids by taking a mask on and off, and that the mask is not comfortable with BTE hearing aids. After all, unless you have a large space between your scalp and ear (which is to say, no one), there’s limited real estate to work with. Anyone who wears both hearing aids and eyeglasses is already aware of the challenges.  Here are five solutions that may help people who wear BTE hearing aids or CIs.  1. If you have long hair, pull it back in a bun and, provided the face mask elastics are adjustable and long enough, loop the elastics around the bun. 2. Sew two large buttons onto a soft headband that are lined up with each ear. Looping the elastic around each button will take the strain off of your ears. See a photo of an example here. 3. Similarly, if you know someone who crochets or sews, you can create a face mask extension out of fabric, ribbon, or yarn that is four inches long. Then add buttons onto the extension so the elastics are off your ears.. 4.
