- Harihara is a lesser-known deity from the Hindu pantheon. He emerges from the amalgamation of Vishnu and Shiva, the preserver and destroyer of the trinity right after Brahma the creator. Also known as Haryardha murti, the origins of this deity have been propounded in the Vamanapurana. When the devas gathered before Vishnu in their search for Shiva, Vishnu had revealed this form to them. Harihara could have also been formed to vanquish the arrogant demon Guhasura whom Brahma had given a boon. The boon in question stated that neither Hari (Vishnu) nor Hara (Shiva) would be able to kill him. Harihara is the deity to have overpowered and slayed Him; the place where this happened in Chitradurga, Karnataka, is now named after this deity and houses a lovely Shankaranarayana temple (Shankara is another name for Shiva; Narayana, for Vishnu). The iconography in question could be traced to centuries ago, specifically to the Kusana period of Indian history.

- Nataraja is the most popular representation of the Hindu God Shiva. In Sanskrit, Nata means dance and raja means Lord. Shiva, therefore, is the 'King of Dancers'.
To understand the concept of Nataraja we have to understand the idea of dance itself. Like yoga, dance induces trance, ecstasy, and the experience of the divine. In India consequently, dance has flourished with the terrific austerities of meditative yoga (fasting, absolute introversion, etc.). Shiva, therefore, the arch-yogi of the gods, is necessarily also the master of the dance.
Shiva Nataraja was first represented thus in a beautiful series of South Indian bronzes dating from the tenth and twelfth centuries A.D. Nataraja dances with his right foot supported by a crouching figure and his left foot elegantly raised in these images. A cobra uncoils from his lower right forearm, and the crescent moon and a skull are on his crest. He dances within an arch of flames.
These iconographic details of Nataraja have the following significance:
The upper right hand holds an hourglass drum which is a symbol of creation. It is beating the pulse of the universe. The drum also provides the music that accompanies Shiva’s dance. It represents sound as the first element in an unfolding universe, for sound is the first and most pervasive of the elements. The story goes that when Shiva granted the boon of wisdom to the ignorant Panini (the great Sanskrit grammarian), the sound of the drum encapsulated the whole of Sanskrit grammar. The first verse of Panini’s grammar is in fact called Shiva sutra.
The hourglass drum also represents the male and female vital principles; two triangles penetrate each other to form a hexagon. When they part, the universe also dissolves.
The opposite hand, the upper left, bears on its palm a tongue of flames. Fire is the element of destruction of the world. According to Hindu mythology at the end of the world, it will be the fire that will be the instrument of annihilation. Thus in the balance of these two hands is illustrated a counterpoise of creation and destruction. Sound against flames, ceaselessness of production against an insatiate appetite of extermination.
The second right hand is held in the Abhaya pose (literally without fear) and so a gesture of protection, as an open palm is most likely to be interpreted. It depicts the god as a protector. The left leg is raised towards the right leg and reaches across it; the lower left hand is stretched across the body and points to the upraised left foot which represents release from the cycle of birth and death. Interestingly, the hand pointing to the uplifted foot is held in a pose imitative of the outstretched trunk of an elephant. In Sanskrit, this is known as the ’Gaja-hasta-mudra’ (the posture of the elephant trunk) and is symbolic of Ganesha, Shiva’s son, the Remover of obstacles.
Shiva dances on the body of a dwarf apasmara-Purusha (the man of forgetfulness) who embodies indifference, ignorance, and laziness. Creation, indeed all creative energy is possible only when the weight of inertia (ignorant darkness) is overcome and suppressed. The Nataraja image thus addresses each individual to overcome complacency and get his or her own act together.
The ring of fire and light, which circumscribes the entire image, identifies the field of the dance with the entire universe. The lotus pedestal on which the image rests locates this universe in the heart or consciousness of each person.

- Lord Buddha Brass Statue in Dhyana Mudra - Robes Decorated with Lotus Flowers
- Lord Buddha hailed from a royal family, of the Shakya clan, hailing from the modern Indo-Nepal border. As a young man, he renounced his aristocratic heritage and embraced the life of an ascetic beggar. Buddha understood the fallacies of materialistic attachments.
He taught his followers that this attachment was the root of all suffering. It's notable however that Buddha never advocated complete renunciation to his disciples, not to all, in any case, instead highlighting the importance of an honest, virtuous, and simple living, while still suggesting them to keep performing their normal worldly duties.
This exquisite brass statue depicts Buddha in all his meditative simplicity. His elegant but simple robes are a representation of traditional attire known as the triple robe, the tricivara, usually consisting of a waistcloth (antaravasaka), an upper robe (uttarasanga), and an outer robe (sanghati). The Buddha's robes are shown decorated with lotus flower patterns symbolizing the purity of spirit and faith. The lotus depicted on the robes is fully bloomed, symbolizing the fully enlightened nature of this Buddha representation.
This skillfully crafted rendition shows a glowing majestic Buddha meditating in the dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. The dhyana mudra here also represents concentration, dhamma, and the sangha, completing the holy Buddhist triumvirate. His two hands are placed on his lap, right on top of his left, holding a begging bowl that symbolizes his lack of possessions. His thumbs stretch slightly upwards, his hands and fingers creating the triangle that represents the spiritual fire of the three jewels.

- For more than 20 years Bexhill-on-Sea’s John Newman sold the latest thrillers and romances to book lovers in London.

The 83-year-old’s The Drummer of Minden has already reached number seven in Amazon’s historical fiction charts.
Painstakingly researched and beautifully written, John’s debut charts the fortunes of a young drummer through Germany to the American colonies during the Seven Years War.
John, who served in the Hampshire Regiment during National Service, said: “When I retired I began to research the history of the Battle of Minden which has always fascinated me.
“I soon realised that my notes were becoming a book.
“The Drummer of Minden is the story of one regiment during the Seven Years War from 1756 to 1763, seen through the eyes of a drummer boy.
“The main character is a fictional drummer boy, but the army commanders and battle sequences are historically accurate.
“The action unfolds through the reconstruction of recruiting, training and campaigning first in Germany and then in the American Colonies.
“The unexpected and astonishing victory of Minden is the climax in a narrative full of drama and incident.”
The Seven Years War saw Colonial rivalries between Britain, France and Spain explode into full-bloodied conflict across much of North America and the Caribbean.
The outcome of the battles at sea and land shaped the regions for centuries to come.
After reading French at London University and completing his National Service, John became a bookseller with Harrods.
He also worked in The Economists Bookshop before buying his own store in Ealing.
John eventually sold Newman Paperbacks and moved to Hastings, where he taught and also acted as a support worker.
As well as writing The Drummer of Minden since retiring, he has also penned a further two historical works, Grenadier and Musketeer.
But it was only after a neighbour went into print that he decided to release his epic story of the Seven Years War.

In the terms of Hindu esoteric philosophy, Maa Durga among many things is Mahamaya- the great illusion that makes the Srishti (creation) possible, and she is Para-Shakti, the primeval female energy that protects the creation.
She rules over our senses and makes us see the invisible while leaving what is evident, unseen. It is her divine, endless play that fills colors in her creation. And when there is unevenness in her Srishti, she employs weapons of destruction and annihilates the source of that instability. Maa Durga, thus, is the Maya-Shakti, the singular source of illusion and its destruction.
This ethereal larger-than-life brass idol of goddess Durga has the most well-known and powerful form of the mother-goddess as its subject. Maa Durga is shown in the act of slaying the buffalo demon, Mahishasur. This Roopa (form) of the great mother is an eternal reminder of her potencies that are beyond the perception of the divine beings. Dashabhujadharini- ten-armed Maa has her Naaga-Paasha (snake serving as a noose) tightened around Mahishasur, who lays distraught at her feet. His previously used body of buffaloes under Devi’s feet, from which Mahishasur is trying to escape. His end is nearing- the Simha (lion) of Maa Durga has his claw voraciously tearing the skin of the demon’s leg, while he roars fiercely at him. With a magnificent mane and naturalistic presentation, the lion embodies the wrath and might of his rider- Mahadevi, the great goddess.
Though her form is clearly that of a warrior, Maa Durga’s countenance carries the tranquillity of a mother and an ascetic. Her exquisite large eyes instill a divine calm in our hearts. Even while being at the center of a battlefield, Devi does not seek pleasure in violence. Her wrath is righteous, it is for the protection of her children, and is released not through her expressions but through her ayudhas (weapons). Her appearance other than her weapons and the lion underneath her circles us back to her role as the Enchantress of the Universe- “Bhuvana Mohini”, the Maha Maya in whom resides the beauty of the cosmos. On her head is a magnificent and distinctive-looking tiara crown whose embellishments curve around Devi’s flawless face. Her hair which Maa ties in the most exquisite buns while adorning herself for Shiva is open, and the tresses fall beautifully on her torso, reaching her rounded breasts that are covered with breast ornaments embellished with a striking floral pattern. Goddess Durga is wearing a sari in the dhoti style, which is covered with a gold waistband and its end-piece is used to create an awe-inspiring cape that falls on her posterior, forming a striking background for her presence in this brass idol.
Presenting a scene full of vigor and movement in a material such as brass is not an easy task, but the artist has done full justice to the subject he chose. From every angle, it seems the subjects are about to move, that the trident of the goddess is about to pierce the heart of the demon and at any moment, we will hear the lion of the Simhavahini (rider of the lion) roar.

Varaha’s iconographic depictions have been detailed in the Agni Purana, Vishnudharmottara Purana, Matsya Purana, Narada Purana, Skanda Purana, and other texts. As the Nri-Varaha, or ‘human-boar,’ Varaha is presented in a combative ‘alidhasana’ with one leg resting on a turtle and the other on the king of all serpents, Sheshnaga. In a glorious manner, Varaha looks up in reverence to Bhudevi, who is held carefully on one of his elbows. His other three hands carry the attributes commonly related to Vishnu: the ‘shankha’ or conch, the mace Kaumodaki, and the war discus ‘Sudarshana chakra’.
Shesha’s presence under the feet of Varaha carries a symbolism of great obeisance towards Vishnu. As one of his earliest and oldest devotees, Shesha has faithfully presented himself as the resting place for Vishnu; moreover, whenever Vishnu descended the Earth in a human form (as Rama or Krishna), Shesha has accompanied him to serve devotedly and help (as Lakshmana or Balrama). Presenting Shesha here carries another symbolic connotation, for the Adishesha is said to hold all the planets of the universe, and its endless coil represents the movement of time. No wonder then, that Bhudevi should be part of this majestic entourage of the world serpent and various other Nagas and Nagini's that are seen praying to the glory of Varaha.
