- Garuda 'the devourer' is the mythical 'Lord of birds' in both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. In the Hindu Puranic legends, Garuda is the son of Kashyapa and Vinata. He is said to have emerged, fully grown, from an egg, after incubating for five hundred years.
Garuda has always been the sworn enemy of snakes and nagas. Such birds include the Sumerian and Greek eagle, the poison-transmuting peacock of Persia and India, the Chinese peng-niao, and the gigantic snake-eating Simurgh or rukh of Sinbad's adventures in Arabian nights.
The word Garuda means 'wings of speech'. He personifies Vedic knowledge. On his wings, as it were, Vedic knowledge has come down to us. The Brihad Tantra Sara lists twelve of his names, which include Suparna (beautiful wings), Garutman (the solar bird), Naga-Bhishana (enemy of serpents), and Khageshvara or Pakshiraj (Lord of birds).
In Tibet, the Indian Garuda became assimilated with the Bon khading (Tib. mkha'lding), the golden 'horned eagle', king of birds, and the Bon bird of fire. Tibetan iconography depicts Garuda with the upper torso and arms of a man, the head, beak, and legs of a bird, and large wings which unfold from his back. His curved beak is like that of an eagle. The hair on his head blazes upwards, and his eyebrows twist like fire.

- This exceptionally ornate brass statue is an example of highly balanced anatomy with delightfully distributed right and left – a strange symmetry with the center unable to contain its line and mincing to the figure’s overall rhythm: the navel and abdomen tilting to the left, and the little inflated right breast, to further right, represents Lord Ganesha in a posture as if commanding and assuring: ‘go ahead, I am there – everywhere and always, for protecting you from everything untoward and your freedom from fears and apprehensions is absolute’. It is not merely the formal gesture of ‘Abhaya’ – freedom from fear that the normal right hand of the elephant god gesticulates but the assurance reveals in his entire being: the rightwards turned trunk, the eyes cast to reflect in them the confidence of one who is undefeatable, the forward thrust of his figure and the kind of attributes that he is carrying.
This rightwards turned trunk, known in the classified iconography of the elephant god Ganesha as ‘Valampuri’, is a rare cast form of his image. An unusual aspect, this Valampuri style of the trunk has been used in the statue quite meaningfully. With this form of the trunk, not its one part, the total image seems to transform into an icon that manifests ‘Abhaya’.
Except that a prominently cast broken tusk and a pot-like inflated belly blend with this form of Lord Ganesha his aspects attributable to his Ekadanta and Lambodara manifestations – the two classical forms perceived in his iconography, the statue brings forth a completely novel form of his image. When in a dance mode his head is seen tilting to the side but in this image, the posture has been used for further re-assuring ‘Abhaya’ which his normal right hand gesticulates. As the trunk turned to the left would divert the eye to a direction different from the hand manifesting ‘Abhaya’, the artist preferred turning it to the right which not only supported the gesture of the right hand but afforded to the image a rare thematic unity making ‘Abhaya’ its core theme and thrust. Lord Ganesha accomplishes everything: auspicious detriment-free beginning and completion of everything undertaken, protection of devotees, bestowing bliss and redemption from the cycle of death and birth, by his mere presence.
This image has, however, been differently conceived. With the forward thrust of his left leg and all three hands carrying weapons, especially the mace-carrying normal right hand revealing rare confidence, this image represents him as moving to act. Except in a dance pose or in his manifestation as the multi-armed Vira Ganapati the standing images of Lord Ganesha are very rare. This statue represents him not only as standing but in an operative posture as images of Lord Vishnu in his manifestation as world commanders sometimes have. To further suggest the pace or movement the artist has conceived the form of his mount mouse under his forward-thrusting left foot. Usually his multi-armed: four or more, images have the set of his arms, along with the attribute that each carries, composed formally ringing around the rest of the body. Different from this formal placing of arms this image has all four arms extended away from the rest of the figure, as when put to act and the weapons carried in them are not just symbolic attributes but realistic in form and size.
Summarily, this medium size image of Lord Ganesha represents him as four-armed carrying in the upper right, his usual ‘parashu’ – battle-axe, in the upper left, ‘trishula’ – trident, the most favored attribute of his father Lord Shiva, in the lower left, ‘Gada’ – mace, the most preferred weapon of Lord Vishnu, and the normal right are held in ‘Abhaya’, the basic thrust and the theme of this image. This synthesis of Shaivite and Vaishnava elements reveals also in the auspicious forehead mark which is a Vaishnava ‘tilaka’ in form but styled like a trident, a Shaivite attribute. The image has been installed on an oval-shaped two-tiered pedestal, the base comprising an inverted lotus molding, and the upper, a plain molding. Lord Ganesh is standing firmly on his right foot while the left is in a forward motion. The image has been conceived with elegantly shaped and normally sized ears, one tusk broken, and a large belly. He is wearing a moderately sized crown and has behind his head a moderate halo. Though cast in lustrous brass the artist has not removed the casting material settled in the recessed parts of the image, especially what served as the outlines defining various designs and patterns with which he has adorned Lord Ganesha’s ensemble, ornaments, attributes, and even body-parts.

Ascott’s acquisition of Oakwood will leapfrog Ascott’s global presence to more than 150,000 units in about 900 properties across over 200 cities in 39 countries. Then he began to dance, but there rushed upon him a last monster in the shape of a malignant dwarf. Upon him the god pressed the tip of his foot, and broke the creature's back so that it writhed upon the ground; and so, his last foe prostrate, Shiva resumed the dance.
To understand the concept of Nataraja we have to understand the idea of dance itself. Like yoga, dance induces trance, ecstasy, and the experience of the divine. In India consequently, dance has flourished side by side with the terrific austerities of the meditation grove (fasting, absolute introversion, etc.). Shiva, therefore, the arch-yogi of the gods, is necessarily also the master of the dance.
Shiva Nataraja was first represented thus in a beautiful series of South Indian bronzes dating from the tenth and twelfth centuries A.D. In these images, Nataraja dances with his right foot supported by a crouching figure and his left foot elegantly raised. A cobra uncoils from his lower right forearm, and the crescent moon and a skull are on his crest. He dances within an arch of flames. This dance is called the Dance of Bliss (anandatandava).
These iconographic details of Nataraja are to be read, according to the Hindu tradition, in terms of a complex pictorial allegory:
The figure depicts a four-armed Shiva. These multiple arms represent the four cardinal directions. Each hand either holds an object or makes a specific mudra (gesture).

Shiva dances on the body of a dwarf apasmara-Purusha (the man of forgetfulness) who embodies indifference, ignorance, and laziness. Creation, indeed all creative energy is possible only when the weight of inertia (the tamasic darkness of the universe) is overcome and suppressed. The Nataraja image thus addresses each individual to overcome complacency and get his or her act together.
The ring of fire and light, which circumscribes the entire image, identifies the field of the dance with the entire universe. The lotus pedestal on which the image rests locates this universe in the heart or consciousness of each person.
Another aspect of Nataraja rich in a similar symbolism is his lengthy and sensuous hair. The long tresses of his matted hair usually piled up in a kind of pyramid, loosen during the triumphant, violent frenzy of his untiring dance. - An ancient South Indian legend tells of Deva Guru Brihaspati and Lord of Winds Vayu, descending to Earth to build a Bhuloka Vaikuntam, in the Thrissur district of Kerala. It was to be a holy abode for Vishnu in the mortal realm. That town was named Guruvayur after its two celestial architects and the temple came to be called the Guruvayur Temple.
Guruvayurappan is the Lord of Guruvayur or the Unnikannan - literally, Little Krishna - representation of Vishnu. The Guruvayurappan avatar, however, looks nothing like a child because it’s a full manifestation of Lord Vishnu, as revealed by baby Krishna to his birth parents Devaki and Vasudeva.
This incredibly beautiful bronze statue is sculpted in the traditional South Indian style sporting minute attention to detail with a flawless finish. It represents the iconic four-armed Vishnu standing upon the traditional lotus pedestal. His left arms carry the divine conch, Panchajanya, and his holy mace Kaumodaki. The conch symbolizes the five elements. The lowered stance of the mace, with its pointed tip resting right beside his left leg, signifies a time of peace, orderliness, and contentment in the world. His right hand holds the majestic discus Sudarshana Chakra and Padma, the divine lotus of creation. Vishnu is shown wearing a holy basil garland around his neck. Also, note the exquisitely carved twin lions on each side of the pedestal. They bring out the regal magnificence and noble strength of the Supreme God in his full manifestation.

Amoghasiddhi is one of the five spiritual vectors of the Buddha’s divine personality (tathagata). He is the Buddha of perfect practice leading up to consummate accomplishment or ‘siddhi’ (‘amogha’ stands for that which goes not in vain). The merciless Durga brings the great Mahishasura to His knees. Her simhavahana (lion-mount) has him between its teeth, while the dashabhujadharini (the one possessed of ten arms) pushes Him down with her feet and drives the spear end of her trishoola (trident) into Him.
