  • Reading academic’s popular new book on Sikhism - Retired Reading academic Dr Satwinder Singh has been rewarded for his first foray into religion by reaching number two in the book charts. The 69-year-old son of refugees from Burma (now Myanmar) is highly regarded for his work at universities around the world, having published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters. But it is the professor’s accessible and enlightening study of Sikhism which has led to a string of five-star reviews and a charting in Amazon’s religion charts. Professor Singh, who has lectured in India and the United Arab Emirates as well as closer to home in Reading and Brunel, began researching the origins and the principles of the Sikh religion almost four years ago. On his retirement from lecturing in 2020, he has dedicated almost all of his time to writing Road to Nirvana: The Sikh Way. Professor Singh said: “I consider this book to be an achievement as I was never trained in religious studies or philosophy.” “These difficult areas of study are not my areas of specialisation”. “A sustained effort of last three-to-four years has resulted in Road to Nirvana: The Sikh Way finally being published.” One of the world’s newest religions – founded around 500 years ago by Guru Nanak - Sikhism is now practised by 25 million followers around the world. The moral principles observed by Sikhs were preached by the ten Sikh Gurus of the 1500s. Drawing on Sikh’s holy text Guru Granth Sahib as well as other sources, Professor Singh has produced a body of work which will appeal to newcomers, committed Sikhs, and researchers.   • Courageous Women who fought against Inequality in the World - Amidst the hardships of inequality, there were many courageous women who fought against injustice during the 1840s. These women made a difference in the world. They spoke up and let their opinions be known. They would not be held back but took a stand for equal rights. Many wanted to vote, have a higher education, and fought against involuntary servitude. They were considered “women of courage.” When several women took a stand, their actions were looked down upon. Speaking publicly was considered improper for a woman, by the standards of the day. In a pastoral letter from the 1800s, the Council of Congregationalist Ministers of Massachusetts said a woman who speaks publicly was “unwomanly and unchristian” and it would “threaten the female character with widespread and permanent injury.” Even though it wasn’t proper, many still gave their opinions. Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony adamantly spoke against prejudice, inequality, and slavery. They encouraged women to get an education and stand up for their rights. But they were not alone. There were many others who expressed their views. These courageous women were an important part of history and made a difference. Did you know that the first four states to give women the right to vote were Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho? These states encouraged women to participate in politics and run for office. They were independent and courageous women. With this in mind, I sat down and wrote three novellas that are part of a series called “Women of Courage.” Each one was inspired from the experiences of my great grandmothers. A Mississippi Sunset is a historical romance. Laura McBride is a liberated and courageous young lady who is convinced that she can help others in her crusade for equality.   • Liú Yung-jen: Cruising Alone in Painting - Powen Gallery is pleased to present "Liú Yung-jen: Cruising Alone in Painting?", a solo exhibition featuring the artist Liú Yung-jen's recent paintings. The show runs from November 19 to December 18. The work of Liú Yung-jen often arouses passionate debate between the figurative and the abstract. But this contention is ensued from a misunderstanding of abstraction and figuration as opposites rather than complementary, and a failure to understand the complex relationship between painting and the world it seeks to represent. We can venture a hypothesis that Liú Yung-jen's artistic practice goes through the mental processes of 'Einfühlung' (Empathy) and 'Fernbild' (the distant form of vision). He attempts to 'feel himself' in his works but never is he strayed from the realm of visual re-presentation, only that the re-presentation of the external world is not his intent, but rather, the unification of form on the canvas. But Liú does not paint in monochrome. He always opens up gaps at the edges or in the centre of his paintings and embeds distinctive forms, such as the series of works developed in the 2010s from the lotus or haystack and evolved in 2021 where the rectangle is formed by the interlacing of half-orange and half-yellow triangles emerged from the black. The form resembles a living organism that changes constantly and recurs in different paintings. Its size and composition, its totality and fragmentation, suggest shifts in perspective.   • Zdenka Fantlova: Holocaust survivor, author and educator dies at the age of 100 - PRESS RELEASE Zdenka Fantlovà 1922–2022 Holocaust survivor, author and educator Zdenka Fantlovà died peacefully at the age of 100 on the 14 November. Zdenka was a well-known speaker on the Holocaust, visiting schools and speaking at book festivals sharing her unique testimony. Zdenka was a great communicator especially through her live performances where she had an incredible knack of connecting with young people. To share her experiences of the Holocaust she wrote the book The Tin Ring, a very moving memoir of love, loss and hope in which she describes how her peaceful life was changed forever when she was sent to Terezin concentration camp. Here, she was given a humble engraved tin ring by her first love Arno. She survived six concentration camps including Auschwitz, Gross Rosen, Mauthausen and Belsen – the worst of all – enduring horrors the like of which most of us can't begin to comprehend, yet never lost the will to live. When Arno gave her the ring he said, ‘That's for our engagement. And, to keep you safe. If we are both alive when the war ends I will find you.’ The ring was the symbol of his love – a tin ring – that gave her the hope to endure unimaginable suffering and survive in the belief that they would one day be re-united. Zdenka protected this little tin ring with her life and with astonishing determination. She lost her entire family in the Holocaust but her own determination to survive and live on was awe-inspiring. Zdenka never showed self-pity. With her compassion for other people, her sense of humour and the ability to take remarkable risks, was just part of part Zdenka's indomitable spirit. She arrived in London over 50 years ago together with her husband, a German WWII refugee, who she met and married in Australia. She is survived by her US-based daughter, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild – and an army of friends who will not forget the vivacious person whose active life took her all over the world. She also gave radio and TV interviews including a special edition of the Antiques Roadshow where Fiona Bruce talked to her about the tin ring of the book; there she was able to thank publicly the unknown soldier who saved her life when the British liberated Bergen Belsen. She was also one of the main commentators in a film by Simon Broughton on the music in Terezin. In recognition of her contribution to Holocaust education she was presented with a Points of Light award in the UK. Her achievements have also been recognised by the town of her birth, Blatna and that of her hometown, Rokycany, both in the Czech Republic, with plaques honouring her contribution to Holocaust awareness.
