- Indian Govt to organise the First Global Tourism G20 Summit
- Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is the industry partner for the summit to be held on April 10-12, in New Delhi.
The Centre will organise the country’s First Global Tourism Summit in April as part of India’s G-20 presidency and all the member countries will participate.
The G20 summit will mainly showcase the major tourist destinations of the country with various government entities as the stakeholders.
For showcasing Incredible India as a major travel destination, G20 will be the Union Tourism ministry’s focus area in 2023.
Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy took part in the 10th International Tourism Mart (ITM) for the Northeast that put a spotlight on the region’s tourism potential and was held in Aizawl from November 17-19 to facilitate interaction among government agencies, business fraternity, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders. Private companies in the hospitality sector are “showing an appetite to invest in the Northeast,” Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh in Aizawl. The event also focused on “priorities of G20 for tourism track”. This was Mizoram’s first time hosting the ITM.
“We have to use this occasion (G20 meetings) to showcase our cultural and traditional heritage to the foreign guests,” Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh had said. During a national conference of state tourism ministers in Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamshala from September 18-20, Arvind Singh said that India has planned to position itself as a “major tourism destination” during its G20 presidency.
As of now, the following dates for the meeting are confirmed.
The First meeting will be held in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat from the 7th of February to the 9th of February.
The Second meeting will be held in Siliguri, West Bengal from the 3rd of April to the 5th of April.
The Third meeting will be held in Srinagar, Jammu Kashmir from the 22nd of May to the 24th of May.
The Fourth meeting will be held in Goa from the 19th of June to the 22nd of June.

- North London writer’s new book on Germanic tribal hero
- A retired businessman from North London is hoping his excessive university research will lead to the spotlight being turned on a forgotten hero from history.
King Gaeseric led a mediocre Germanic tribe to greatness during the fifth century.
But he, along with the rest of his Vandal and Alan supporters, rarely get the recognition they deserve for bringing an end to the Western Roman Empire.
Now, Edmund Karlsson hopes to bring Gaeseric’s heroics to the fore with a gripping debut novel, The Vandals: The Migration to the Rhine.
The Birkbeck graduate explained: “ The Vandals were an insignificant Germanic tribe with an undistinguished military record who lost most of their battles.
“How this small tribe survived a great migration from modern day Hungary to Africa, and then went on to rule a Mediterranean kingdom, so powerful it could sack Rome, is an incredible story.
“The creative part of The Vandals: The Migration to the Rhine was to find plausible links between the few known facts on the Vandals’ migration.
“There is little doubt that the main character Gaeseric was an inspirational figure.
“If one man can be held responsible for the fall of Rome then the Vandal King Gaeseric would be the choice of many historians.”
Ancient history has become big business in recent years with countless novels, films and television shows recounting the exploits of the Romans, Vikings, Ottomans and Saxons.
But many of the lesser tribes have generally been ignored by novelists and screenplay writers.
Karlsson admits it was this lack of attention which drew him to the exploits of the Vandals and King Gaeseric.
He explained: “My dissertation for my History degree was on the Vandals.
“I chose this subject partly because there was only a limited number of primary sources to read and partly because the Vandals get relatively little coverage in English language literature.
“The first lockdown struck as I was starting my dissertation and I ended up doing far more research than the 10,000 word project needed.
“By the second lockdown I had resolved to turn my excess research material into an historical novel.”
The Vandals: The Migration to the Rhine has already reached number two in Amazon’s Ancient History charts.
Edmund’s gripping novel has been described as ‘well-written’ and ‘very interesting’ by critics.
Told by narrator Scuta – Gaeseric’s fictitious half-brother – The Vandals: The Migration to the Rhine is a compelling adventure which doesn’t shy away from the complex tribal politics of fifth century Europe.

- A retired teacher from Aberdeenshire is spearheading a French language revival with the help of her toy rabbit.
Rhona Mair began creating stories with simple French words to supplement her granddaughter’s school lessons.
And following encouragement from fellow members of her reading club she began crafting the stories into a series of rhyming books.
